I've been thinking about the THE RAT.....I suppose they have alway been here but Ive just never seen one before...

.....still, I think I'll go and get something to help them 'move' on

And the beauty about rain in the early shuts the birds up and I can sleep past 4am!

It should rain between 4am - 6am every morning

Julcoe....cats are so generous!

CherryBlossom Report 2 Jul 2010 08:15

You're very lucky, Ginny, not to have come across a rat before......

Like Julcoe's my cats were very generous with them.

Had mates round for tea a while back and OH went to pull the chair out to seat their young daughter to see a long tail sticking out from under the tablecloth!!

He rapidly pushed the chair back and suggested they take a quick tour round the garden - at that point he wasn't sure if it was still alive or not.......

Fortunately it was as dead as a dodo and after some rapid re-arranging of furniture and disinfection supper commenced with guests none the wiser.

Our old cat finally died a couple of weeks ago but in his heyday it was a regular occurence to find dead rodents under the dining room table.

Actually the dead ones weren't so bad - at least they stayed put. It was the live ones that caused the problems......

Jonesey Report 2 Jul 2010 08:22

Without wishing to appear a sad old G-t (I know I may be one but I don't like to look like one) has anybody considered that a lively thread such as this, full of inventive chat between online friends might be better placed on the "Chat" board rather than the "Trying to Find" one?

That might be why someone objected and GR Whooshed it.

Before anyone even considers that it might have been I who raised the objection let me categorically state that it was not!! I would never have the temerity to object to any thread originally posted by a well respected and well loved resident of the Independent Republic of South Yorkshire.

Cynthia Report 2 Jul 2010 08:42

Well, that let's Ginny out then!

Anyway dear Jonesey, how do we know that you don't look like a sad old G-t? C'mon, prove it.

Tall, dark and handsome?

Small and compact with blonde hair, ice blue eyes and jutting chin?

Medium height, brown hair, with arresting hazel eyes and a Roman nose?

None of the above?

Do tell :)))

Gins Report 2 Jul 2010 08:44

Mr Jones (aka SOG)

The whole idea of the thread was to try and get new users used to the idea that it is not good to post twice about the same person

And new users won’t go on chat so won’t see the polite request and advice about duplicate postings.

But thanks for your input DJ and of course for your acknowledgment of the great Yorkshire Republic

Gins Report 2 Jul 2010 09:55

NL....I dont know how you cope with the cats bringing you prezzies!

Think I need to call down B&Q and find some food for my little visitors

CherryBlossom Report 2 Jul 2010 10:05

The dead pressies from the cats were fine - once we'd learned to look under the table before sitting down for breakfast - nothing worse than putting feet in squishy bits first thing in the morning.

We've got some blue/purple stuff (probably the same as Ratatack) we put down now. Need to keep them under control as we've just put in a load of raised decking - definite rat hotel that will be if we don't watch out.

Gins Report 2 Jul 2010 10:19

Oh noooo...I have decking on the back too. Right, B&Q it is then!

Gins Report 2 Jul 2010 10:27

Seems my naughty antics upset our Jeanie last night and she thought I was insinuating it was 'she' who had the thread deleted

Of course I was.....I now retract my joshing insinuation and have removed my offensively taken comments

I'm sorry it upset you Jeanie

Gins Report 2 Jul 2010 10:36

Can I get Ratatack from B&Q....need some now!

SlingerWood Report 2 Jul 2010 11:18

Hi girls

Thought of an alternative to killing the poor rats.... did a quick look on google and came up with this...

Still means killing but why waist the meat

Some nice pictures of preparation.... sort of reminds me of my sort time in the Maylay jungle

Stewed Cane Rat
Skin and eviscerate the rat and split it lengthwise. Fry until brown in a mixture of butter and peanut oil. Cover with water, add tomatoes or tomato purée, hot red peppers, and salt. Simmer the rat until tender and serve with rice.

Stuffed Dormice / Ancient Rome
Prepare a stuffing of dormouse meat or pork, pepper, pine nuts, broth, asafoetida, and some garum (substitute anchovy paste.) Stuff the mice and sew them up. Bake them in an oven on a tile.

Roasted Field Mice (Raton de campo asado) / Mexico
Skin and eviscerate field mice. Skewer them and roast over an open fire or coals. These are probably great as hors d'oeuvres with margaritas or "salty dogs."

Yum.. yummm

FannyByGaslight Report 2 Jul 2010 11:29

A man after my heart Peter.

In Spain there is a place that you can still get White Rat Paella.

And from Google
paella varied greatly with the most unusual being marsh rat.

Oh ,,and get the posh nobs with "Decking".

All I got is grass and broken paving slabs..

Jonesey darling.
How can you poss be a SOG if you are Welsh? Its just not possible.
But watch out cos it sure looked like our Cyn was making eyes your way earlier and I have heard tales of her that would singe your ears......:)

CherryBlossom Report 2 Jul 2010 11:38

Lovely Peter...... must put those on the menu NOT!

Remind me not to accept an invitation to yours for dinner!

Or yours Fan!!!!

Can't see anything on the B&Q website for rat killing but whatever you get should have something like Difenacoum in it. I also have one of those electronic deterrents plugged into a socket in the garage plus one in the kitchen (there's a hole in the wall behind the cupboards in the kitchen which goes through to the garage) which seems to work.

We had a rat problem in our workshop a couple of years ago - busy typing away and could hear scratching in the roof. I swore there must be some sort of EU regulation which prevented me from working in those conditions. They used to drop down off the grain trailers that come in for service.

OH disagreed, put down some bait and plugged in a couple of the electronic thingies, told me not to be such a wuss and get on with my typing!!

***touch wood*** they haven't been back.

Poor Jeanie - please don't be upset with Ginny. That just means that whoever whooshed the thread has won!!

Gins Report 2 Jul 2010 11:43

Right that’s it...I’m mortified at you lot and rats. There’s Pete and Fans troughing them

and then you NL...making me think they is going to drop down from the rafters like the SAS....

Cuppa...fag and B&Q

Gins Report 2 Jul 2010 11:44

Err...yes Fans I did notice that flirting from our Cyns...

...dirty girl

SlingerWood Report 2 Jul 2010 11:48

Steady on Fran… some people are already suggesting marriage between us…… can’t let the rumours spread too far… SHE might have something to say about it.

But we seem to be on the same ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ length

Decking….. old hat stuff… not really for posh people Fran. Too much maintenance…. Just had new PATIO laid to go with the extension.

OOOOOO get me….

OOOOOO get me….

CherryBlossom Report 2 Jul 2010 11:49

Oh yes, big beggers they was too Gins - up there with their hobnailed boots on they were. I went round with bits of rag plugging up all the holes in the ceiling just in case they abseiled down.

Then I find they've munched a hole in the wall in my bathroom, traipsed through the office into the canteen area and helped themselves to my Hobnobs.

That was the final straw - I was prepared to live and let live until they snaffled my biccies.......

SlingerWood Report 2 Jul 2010 11:56
