Trying to find info on my great Aunt. Born in Aberdeen to George & Mary (nee Brown) in 1870. Her parents lived in Salford and was their second child. She lived at some point with her Grandmother(Christina Whitecross(nee Bisset) in Aberdeen. She was born Annie Whitecross but married someone called West. This info is on her grandmothers will. After that there appears to be no more trace of her or her married family. Any ideas?

Hi Aliviegal, Yes this is the correct family. The 1st child b. in Yorkshire, t he 11 youngest children were all born in Salford. It appears the grandmother in Scotland lost a daughter, then at some age Ann goes to live with her. Left everything in the grandmothers (My 2 x gt g/mother) will and is married to ? West but then vanishes. Thanks

Patricia,
I am sure you are looking for the wrong Annie Whitecross marrying Mr West.
I posted a marriage earlier for Richard William West to Ann Whitecross in 1878 in Aberdeen. This marriage is Christina's DAUGHTER Ann......NOT her granddaughter Annie.
I have a copy of this marriage if you want it.....it's definitely Christina's daughter. Christina died in 1890 and the informant on her death reg is her son in law R W West.
Closing down for the night so won't reply until tomorrow.

Unless you have absolute concrete evidence to the contrary, I think Annie Whitecross born 1870/1 died in 1874 in Lancashire.
The other Ann West nee Whitecross is alive and well and still in Aberdeen in 1901.

Hi, Must apologise for not picking up this value information, I have been away, changed tap tops etc, so have just picked up the message in my e-mail. Yes this must be her, her younger sister is my grandmother and for some unknown reason Ann (Annie) was born in Scotland lived in Lancashire with the rest of the family then returns to Scotland and becomes Christina's daughter, we are to assume she was adopted by her grandmother so she is referred to as a daughter. It is strange one of the daughters is called Edith this is my grandmothers name (not on your list as she was the last) and that name is also my middle name, also another sister was called Christina and has living reaitives. The info you give me and the extra on the West (On Christina's death cert you cannot make out the christiian name of the informer just West). I am very grateful and will follow up on the Scotland People site. Greetings Patricia

Hi Mary, Forgot to add that a lot of my info came from my Mother's sister who died last year (aged 101) also my mothers cousin who recently died (89) whose Mother( Annies siste Maryr) gave her info over the years about this sister who was born in Scotland and at some point went there. She appears in the English census then is gone. It would appear there was a ? mark over Elizabeth Christina's daughter. In Christina's will Annie Duguid Whitecross/West is stated as her only daughter. Thanks again Patricia

Hi Patricia
Sorry, but that just doesn't make any sense??
Christina's daughter Annie was born 1854/5 and married in 1878 to Richard William West.......she can't possibly be the same Annie born in 1870 to George and Mary. There is no way any minister would marry an 8 year old!!
I have a copy of this marriage cert.....if you want a copy of it let me know.....Annie is aged 23 on it.
The informant on Christina's death reg is R W West, son-in-law, it's very clear.
Annie born 1854/5 died in 1902 as Annie West.....see her death reg on my earlier post above.
If you buy this death cert for Annie Whitecross in 1874 - if her parents aren't George and Mary, I'll give you the £9.25 myself!! :-))
Name: Annie Whitecross Estimated birth year: abt 1871 Year of Registration: 1874 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun Age at Death: 3 District: Chorlton County: Lancashire Volume: 8c Page: 544
Mary
Edit: I don't mean this to sound rude, but I think perhaps your elderly relatives have got themselves a bit mixed up with the 2 Annie's, and which one died and which one didn't???

Hi Patricia
I've been doing a bit more searching and have a bit more info for you.
I believe the marriage of George Whitecross to Christina Bisset was a 2nd marriage for George. You mentioned that according to her will Christina said she only had 1 daughter........I'm pretty certain that is correct!!
George Whitecross first married Mary Clark in 1838. They had 2 children George and Elizabeth.
George then married Christina Bisset in 1849 and they had one child - Ann(ie)
The daughter Elizabeth 1st married William McRobb in 1869, he died and she then married James Ritchie in 1874 - the crucial bit is that on each of her marriages she gives her parents as George Whitecross and Mary Clark (deceased). On Elizabeth's 2nd marriage one of the witnesses is A Whitecross - Ann Whitecross??
This is James and Elizabeth with children in 1881:
1881 Scotland Census about James Ritchie Name: James Ritchie Age: 36 Estimated birth year: abt 1845 Relationship: Head Spouse's name : Elizabeth Gender: Male Where born: Banchory, Kincardineshire Registration Number: 168/2 Registration district: Old Machar Civil parish: Old Machar County: Aberdeenshire Address: 23 Occupation: Bootmaker On Own Act ED: 7 Household schedule number: 288 Line: 16 Roll: cssct1881_52 Household Members: Name Age James Ritchie 36 Elizabeth Ritchie 36 Ann Mc K Ritchie 10 James Ritchie 4
It's a shame the son George married in England as the English certs only give the father's name. :-(((((

Hello Mary, Just picked up your message, on hols at the moment. The confusion in my family about Ann & Annie being the same person would appear from your research, two seperate people. Also the fact that George Whitecross snr was married twice also answers questions. I had been trying to find out for my Mothers cousin (who sadly died recently without knowing this latest info) but my cousin is very interested in his family history in Scotland. I have my Great Grandfathers wedding cert George Jrn but as you say no mention of Mother. I have been working on this family with Scotland research, but obviously not as expert as yourself. After our hols it will give me a lot more to work on, so thanks for unlocking some of the doors that appeared to be closed. Have traced my fathers family and have found a lot of Scottish ancestory, so would appear to have a lot of Scottish blood! Patricia

Hi Mary, Just had a thought Christina Whitecross nee Bisset is not my blood line, yet strange one of the children born to George Jrn & Mary (also known as Alice) was called Christina, known as Tina, her 2 grandchildren still alive. I need to be looking at the first wife of George. There has been a wierd tale in the family about the family of George Jrn but have failed to prove it!. Patricia

Hi Patricia
Yes, Ann b 1854 and Annie b 1870 are 2 different people. Ann b 1854 is Christina's daughter and Annie b 1870 is Christina's granddaughter.
I'm 99.9% certain that Annie b 1870 died in 1874, without the death cert I can't be 100% certain obviously :-))))))
I started my family history research by doing my Scottish line, so I got pretty good at searching on Scotlands People LOL.
Ohhh! A wierd tale about George Jrn eh? Tell me more, I'll see what I can find! LOL
Mary
Edit: I forgot.......George snr died 11th July 1876 in Aberdeen, parents were Alexander Whitecross, a crofter and Janet m.s. Mitchell, both deceased.

Hi Mary, I have managed to discover family on my Fathers side and up to a point my Mother except this Whitecross side. They have given me the run around and at one point nearly gave up until I discovered Christina Bisset/Whitecross. The story about George Whitecross was that he was the son of a laird who married (against family wishes) the servant Mary Brown (England Northant/Lincoln area), he was cut off from his family and they moved to Whiston (Rotherham Eng) got married and had 1st son George then for whatever reason moved to Hulme (Salford) plus other addresses. George (my Gt G/Father) was a plumber, had a long beard, metal from the plumbing got onto his beard and this got into his system and died when my Grandmother Edith (Last child) was only 2. I thought I had got somewhere near to this tale when I discovered Christina and her background but as you have proved this is not so. I have to admit that whilst the scottish records give more detail (have just discovered some of my husbands family) it appears harder to find, this has proved so with my Mother-in-Law. We pick her up in England but nothering in Scotland of her birth. I am really grateful for your help with the Whitecross family, it has certainly put a different light on this research. Thanks again for this latest info. Patricia

Hi Patricia
Well usually there is some grain of truth in these family stories........but not always I have found! LOL
One of my Scottish lines is Walker and according to my grandmother we are related to the Johnnie Walker whiskey family.........well if we are I certainly haven't found any connection yet, and I've managed to get a long way back on that line!! LOL
