i came across the same problem mary wheni searched for william on the 1901 census i could not find him either.
but i think i found him on the 1891 census.
it had the following information.

william marks aged 13
year of birth 1878
son
tin worker
25 morris streeet
swansea
Llangyfelach

then it says place of birth rhondda?

all i know is that when i tended the family grave both dorothy and alice are named as marks so that is what started of this search as it indicated that 1 or maybe both of the them were unmarried.

when my mum has spoken about catherine she has always reffered to her as catherine lewis.
all i know is that when i have asked my family about mary maud they have said that they have never heard of her and that alice was the grandmother to them

dorothy marks also had a brother named daniel marks not sure of he was a few yrs younger or older than dorothy.
he was an albino and he passed away in swansea roughly 10/12 years ago.
danile was married to a lady knowm as hazel dont know here maiden name, however daniel was also married befor and has 3 children names unknown.

my family are tending to be a bit vague on information ?

You need to get the marriage cert of William Marks and his wife Catherine to find out who their fathers were. We know William's father was a Daniel Marks because we have seen him on the census. We need to know who Catherine's father was. If Catherine married William in 1904 then both the children you are talking about were born before their marriage so would be Lewis's if Catherine Lewis is who he married. So you would look for births of Mary Maud Lewis and Alice May Lewis. Unfortunately there are quite a few Alice May's born around the same years and areas. Or Catherine could have been married before to a Lewis.

Which family was Alice living with when she died in 1964,she died as Alice M Marks,so prosumebly she didn't marry.

If your family know about Dorothy and her Mum was Mary, then why does your family not know about Mary

Yet you say your family know of an Alice, but you have only just found out about her

How do you know the Catherine in the 1901 is the same lady as the 1911

On the marriage that Choccy put up for William Marks and Catherine Lewis there was also a Thomas Jenkins marriaed at the same time. Catherine Lewis is living with a family of Jenkins as a lodger on the 1901 census with a daughter Alice May Lewis and Catherine is single. Could this be the Alice that people remember born out of wedlock and when Catherine married she may have taken the Marks surname.

I can't find a birth record for Mary Maud 1898 nor find her on 1901 census.
Where was William marks 1901,his parents were Daniel 1857 and Mary 1859.
1891 census says William born Rhonda and he is a tin worker.

It looks to me as though Alice May and Mary Maud are one in the same person especially as no one in your family as ever heard of Mary Maud.

Have you found a marriage or death for Mary Maud?

Helen Report 8 Jun 2010 11:33

no i havent got marys birth cert.
my mum mentioned some time ago that there was a catherine in our family who lived at 55 crwon street morriston and spoke both welsh and english.
she aslo mentioned that william was her father and that he had passed away when she was 14,my mums year of birth was 1941.
however when i did a lot more research i discovered that william was in fact her grandfather not her father.
so i know there is the possibilty that i could have yet again searched on the wronf family but its the alice that keeps coming up all the time.
my family have never heard of a mary maud as i have asked them all and its the alice that they have always known.
alice died in morriston and was living at another address with her family?

Helen

Helen Report 8 Jun 2010 10:58

the 1 i have for alice i got over 5 years ago thats how long its taken me to search on and off.
it doesnt help much either as there is no mention of a husband or father on the birth cert for alice,or the 1 for mary maud.
plus the catherine lewis i have on alices birth cert just put a x for her name .

Julie

Julie Report 8 Jun 2010 10:52

Maybe the best this to do is get the B/C's for both Alice & Mary

Helen

Helen Report 8 Jun 2010 10:48

the dates of birth between alice may and mary maud are rather close alice was born on 29th august 1897 in swansea and mary maud was born in 1898 in morriston, swansea.
i really dont know if theses two are seperate families or if they are the same person?

Helen

Helen Report 8 Jun 2010 10:41

thanks choccy ,
this is the exact info i had yesterday.
its the same family for definate but its the alice marks thats stumping me as i cant fine her at all xxx

Helen

Helen Report 8 Jun 2010 10:39

no it didnt sorry.
i only know that she passed away at the age of 67 yrs.
in swansea .
at the time the address was different also but in morriston as well.
its hard as i dont know catherines maiden name, but when i did an advanced search i found a catherine lewis in morriston and on the 1901 census she was living in woodfield street morriston in lodgings with a family and she had a daughter named alice may who was born in 1897 birth reg on 5th october in swansea.
alice was born in the union workhouse in swansea and it states that her mum catherine was a tinplate cleaner.
i dont know if there is a link between theses of if they are a seperate family altogether?
