It isn't particularly confusing - believe me you will come across far more difficult mysteries to solve as you progress. The problem is that your husband's grandparents married after the 1911 census, so we have no way of really knowing if we have found the right Ernest's birth, or his whereabouts on the census records.

The marriage cert will give you his father's name and occupation, hopefully it will be Albert, an agricultural labourer or similar. Unfortunately, he may have died by then, and might just be described as "dead".
