Sorry, Jane, you won't like this, but there's no way of knowing that the witness was the father - relationships of witnesses are not recorded.

It would be more likely to have been his brother - if that was the relationship of the person with whom he was residing in 1841.

With ref to Martha in 1841 - my suggestion was just that - a speculative suggestion. If you have Joseph married to someone else - fair enough. What was his birthplace said to have been?

HI Flick.

On the marriage cert it sates that his fathers name was Joseph. But you are right as I believe he had a brother called Joseph then it could well be his brother witnessing teh marriage.

AS for the 1841 census. I have not seen it myself so I don not know exactly what it says. I am only guessing that they are brother and sisters because of their ages. Joseph 20, Martha 25 and Jonathan 15yrs.

I have since found a Martha born to Joseph and Ann Rushworth on the IGI in 1813. which leads me to think that the parents were Joseph and Ann.

All the best

Jane

The 1841 doesn't record relationships - or birthplaces. And ages of over-15's are almost always rounded down to the nearest 5 - so the IGI entry could well be the Martha living in the household with Joseph and Jonatan. Sounds promising!

Thanks Flick.

You have been very kind giving up all this time to help me. I think the only thing left to do is to try and find some deaths For Jonathan and Joseph and see if that turns up anything. I have a possible death for JOnathan as 1895 so perhaps I will start by sending for that one. Then I will try and find one for Joseph.

Thanks again for all your help.
