Do you not have any other info that could help?
Who did he marry?

What makes you think that Daniel Frederick Davis was his father?

For the benefit of other helpers here's a pm from Anne:-

From Anne Hi, Catherine, thanks for your message,
I've checked the district of Wesbury, and unfortunely it's not him.
The only information that I have is a marriage certificate of David Rouland(Rowland on certificate, no David)
His father was down as Daniel Frederick Davis,a manager, but was deceased. (I',m aware that Daniel Fredericks name could be the other way round.
Apart from some birth certificates of Davids children, I haven't got much else.
Daniel Frederick was rumoured to have married a french actress or singer.
Also had a son possibly named Albert who was a Chief Petty Officer in the 2nd world war.
David was also a driver in the R.S.C.A. in 1940, but do not have his service No.(Essex branch)
Not a lot to go on is there, I've been trying for the past 7 years to find where he was born, and no such luck. Sorry to go on so much, regards Anne.

Rootgatherer posted that birth and Catherine posted the corresponding 1901 census above in the thread.

I looked at the census image, and the surname does read Davies, but these things happen.

I'd get that birth cert and see what it says.

David Rouland Davis 1901

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 13 May 2010 19:24

What might that mean, Anne?

Perhaps: "Thank you very much for all the time and effort you all put into finding this information for me, and I'll take that advice"?

Searching for clues ...

Name: Rowland Davis
[Rowland Cross]
[See User Comment]
Spouse Surname: Crose [Winnifred Cross]
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1926
Registration district: Paddington
Registration county (inferred): London
Volume Number: 1a
Page Number: 66

(Anne, the only thing you can correct there is the person's own surname -- Ancestry has mistranscribed the spouse's name but doesn't provide a facility to correct it. Your user comment allows others to search for the spouse's record if needed.)

You hadn't given an idea of where he married, which of course is not necessarily connected with where he was born.

Do you have his death record, and does it give a date of birth? If he died after 1969, it should.

Where do you have the name "David Rouland Davis" from? A child's birth certificate?

Harry is a railway traffic inspector. Dang, I was hoping he was an impressario and Cecilia Kate his protégée!

Thanks! - sorry, I was editing my previous post to add the disappointing news of Harry's occupation in 1901. ;)

Should it have been the right Rouland, it would have been a fine family to acquire!

Catherine

Catherine Report 13 May 2010 22:20

If the 1856 birth is not the correct one, then what about this one:-

Births Jun 1875 (>99%)
Davis Frederick Daniel St. Olave 1d 194
The district St. Olave is an alternative name for St Olave Southwark and it spans the boundaries of the counties of London and Surrey

This is the only one I could find for this name anywhere in the country beside one in 1909, which obviously can't be the correct one.

Anne, you still haven't answered my questions:-
Where and when did the marriage of David take place, and what was his address at the time of marriage?
Were there any witnesses that could be relatives?

You say that the cert. gives his father, Daniel's occupation as Manager but we don't know of what he was manager. Do you not have any clues that could put us on the right track?

EDIT:-
the birth above:-
Name: Frederick Daniel Davis
Record Type: Baptism
Date: 20 Jun 1875
Born: 19 Apr 1875
Father's Name: Richard Francis Davis
Mother's Name: Kate Davis
Parish: St John Horselydown
Borough: Southwark
County: Middlesex
Address: 9 Parish Street
Occupation: (looks like) Vellun Binder

also:-
Charles Richard Davis
Christened on the same day, same date of birth and same parents!

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 13 May 2010 22:48

Or my other one: where does Anne have the name "David Rouland Daniel" from in the first place?

Rather than wait for answers, I found the marriage and posted it on the previous page. I knew it was the right one because Anne has attempted to make a correction to the record at Ancestry. ;)

My own theory at this point is that Anne has herself a name-shifter, as many of us do. Her DRD was probably born with a different name, whether given names or surname, and the father's name on the marriage certificate could be a complete invention or could be an amalgam of birth father's surname or given names, stepfather's surname or given names, etc.

Catherine

Catherine Report 13 May 2010 23:14

I have a theory which may be absolute rubbish, but I'll put it to you anyway:-

After trying a search for a birth under the name of Frederick Daniel Davis, I came across this record which fits with date and correct name and initial, even though place of birth doesn't fit.

1901
Name: Frederick D Davis
Age: 27
Estimated birth year: abt 1874
Relation: Son-in-law
Spouse's name: Florence A
Gender: Male
Where born: Minchinghampton, Gloucestershire, England

Civil parish: Aston
Ecclesiastical parish: St Catherine
County/Island: Warwickshire
Country: England

Street Address: 189 Bloomsbury Road

Occupation: Hairdresser - Own Account - At Home

Registration district: Aston
Sub-registration district: Duddeston
ED, institution, or vessel: 44
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 75
Household Members:
Name Age
George Wareing 61
Julia H Wareing 61
Julia M Wareing 40
George B Wareing 36
Florence A Davis 26
Frederick D Davis 27

If David was born in 1901 but after the census was taken, he wouldn't show on the record. This Frederick's occupation is Hairdresser, so maybe by the time his son married, he had become the Manager of a Hairdressing Salon?

.....so carrying on from here I checked for a marriage for Florence and Frederick, but couldn't find anything that fit exactly. So I checked for a marriage for Florence Wareing to ?? Davis and I found this one:-

Marriages Dec 1899 (>99%)
Blower Fred Aston 6d 651
xxxx Davis Alfred Daniel Aston 6d 651
Scarlett Nellie Aston 6d 651
xxxxx Wareing Florence Amy Aston 6d 651

correct time and area and it was the only one to show, but the name is Alfred Daniel and not Frederick Daniel?

I then checked the 1881 census for a Frederick D. Davis born 1874 in Minchinghampton, Gloucestershire but nothing showed.
However, I did find this one for an Alfred D. Davis:-

1881
Name: Alfred D. Davis
Age: 7
Estimated birth year: abt 1874
Relation: Son
Father's Name: John G.
Mother's Name: Emma
Gender: Male
Where born: M Hampton, Gloucestershire, England

Civil parish: Minchinhampton
County/Island: Gloucestershire
Country: England

Street Address: Beech Nap

Occupation: Scholar

Registration district: Stroud
Sub-registration district: Minchinhampton
ED, institution, or vessel: 6
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
John G. Davis 36
Emma Davis 33
James T. Davis 14
Henry C. Davis 10
Alfred D. Davis 7
William Davis 5

There is a birth in Gloucestershire for an Alfred Daniel Davis which would fit this record, but the question still remains as to:-
Why did Alfred D. Davis from the marriage record become Frederick D. Davis in the census record?
The two names are similar when you think about it:-
Al "fred" "Fred"erick ????

So...............is your Frederick Daniel Davis, really Alfred Daniel Davis?

Anyone any thoughts?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 13 May 2010 23:31

I wouldn't worry too much about the Alfred/Frederick thing. If he was called Fred, the enumerator might have taken it upon himself to make it Frederick, or his parents-in-law might have thought he was Frederick (and after his death his son assumed the same thing), or he might have just decided he preferred to be Frederick.

Now as to whether he's Anne's Frederick Daniel Davis ... ;)

edit -- 1901 hairdresser:

DAVIS ALFRED 1874 37 Stroud Gloucestershire

Florence doesn't seem to be with him, or to be in Stroud, or to have died 1901-1911 ...

Catherine

Catherine Report 13 May 2010 23:32

I've just checked out the Frederick Daniel Davis from the birth record and found the family in 1881 but no sign of Frederick.
But I did find this:-
Deaths Jun 1876 (>99%)
Davis Frederick Daniel 0 St. Olave 1d 122

so this one can't be your Frederick Daniel, or Daniel Frederick Davis, or whatever the H*** he's called!

Oh dear, must be getting late!
I'm off to bed, hope I don't dream about Fred!
