Dear Julie,
You have William Swain married in 1861, and unmarried in 1851:
1851 England Census
William Swain Age: 17 Estimated birth year: abt 1834 Relation: Son Father's Name: John Mother's Name: Jane Gender: Male Where born: Belper, Derbyshire, England
Civil parish: Belper Ecclesiastical parish: St Mary County/Island: Derbyshire Country: England Registration district: Belper Sub-registration district: Duffield ED, institution, or vessel: 9
John Swain 38
Jane Swain 37
Samuel Swain 20
William Swain 17
Charlotte Swain 12
Thomas Swain 14
Elizabeth Swain 9
John Swain 7
Isaac Swain 4
Mary Swain 7 Mo
Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 2144; Folio: 600; Page: 6; GSU roll: 87775.
therefore William Swain married Alice any time between 1851 and 1861.
You select the marriage option in free bmd, put swain and william in the surname first name search option, with alice for first name of spouse. You put the dates to between 1851 and 1861. Click find, and 2 options appear, Sheffield highly unlikely, no connections, but Belper looks just right. Click on 612, which will bring up other people recorded under same entry, who are potential partners. There is a bride missing, as should be in pairs, but you have found a potential Alice, surname Howarth. From the 1861 census Alice was born in 1835 in Southwell Northampton (or Nottinghamshire in fact, their geography no better than ours'), so searching the censuses for Alice Howarth in 1851 can help to confirm if this is a match.
Hope that explains.
Pat

Could this be the marriage:-

Name: William Swain
Year of Registration: 1860
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Belper
County: Derbyshire
Volume: 7b
Page: 612

Also on the same page is an Alice Howarth.

Did the couple have any children? A birth certificate for one of the children would give Alice's maiden name.
