G'Day spike, Thats OK. Just to let you know I checked the original view for Emma and she was born in Bristol.

Then I checked FBMD with a Phonetic search its down as
SWORMANN, Emma b. Jun 1850. Bristol 11 1[7_]6
I checked the original View and the transcriber did verry well to get any thing off the page as its near Illegible.

Frederick Mar 56, Herman Dec 58, Henry Dec 60 all St.George in the East, come straight up correctly.

Anne Maria Sworman b. Sep 1852 St G E

Graham

Very elusive they are. I have grt grandfather living with elder son & his family in Charlton SE London on the 1907 death cert of grt grandma. but by 1911 he was no longer with his DIL, now widowed, and no death found for him . I think he may have gone back to Germany.

Thanks Sharon and Ann My grandad was born c 1880 in Germany he died aged 31 in 1911. the first record I have is the birth of the youngest son Gottlieb in Bradford in 1889.I have the cert, then the family are in Limehouse on the 1891 and some of the family in Charlton SE London in 1901 and 1911 , I havent been able to find where in Germany the family came from. The name was Fahse with two umlaats over the "a" just putting the surname in on Ancestry only finds the birth/ census and one incoming entry in the 1950 for a Betty from S.Africa,
I know lots of Fahse went to the USA but whether they are of the same family I dont know with the limted info i have,
I suppose coming over in the 1880,s was why I was told no records kept on travel

Ann is right, I found the records on Ancestry, the original documents are very hard to read so could not get any further information.

I have a German grand father born c 1880 .the family came to the UK between the 1881 census and 1889 when the youngest son was born in Bradford .
I enquired at the National Archives when looking for poss naturalization(none found) if there were any records of passengers coming to the UK from Germany and was told none kept ,They would have come over as foot passengers on the cross ferry so no records were kept

My great grandfather, great grandmother and great uncles came over here from Germany (Prussia) c1898. He was a baker. I don't mean to dampen your spirits but I have never found any record of him coming into this country and it might be the same for you and your ancestor.

Have you found him on any censuses? Does it say anything about him being naturalised? There are naturalisation records that might help you. My great grandparents were never naturalised but I was lucky to get in touch with a cousin on here who had the birth certificate of her great grandfather, my great uncle Harry (born Heinrich) and from there I contacted record offices local to that area. Six months later after hearing nothing, I got very lucky and the record office had found the familienbuchs that were to do with my two lines.

Best of luck

Chloe
