Hi,im hoping for information,or where to search for info' on the father of Joseph Henry Lamb c1852. His name was also Joseph Henry Lamb, and he was a private in the Grenadier Guards. The 1901 census states that Joseph (c1852)was born in Wellington Barracks, London. This is all I have to go on and Iam clueless as what to do next.

1871,I think any way. He married Mary Ellen Duff in the J/A/S Q 1871 in Woolwich I believe so it seems reasonable that it is him.

DUFF, Sarah Head F 47 1824 Gloucestershire <<married DUFF, Caroline P Daughter F 18 1853 Kent LAMB, Joseph H Step-Son M 18 1853 Surrey (Lambeth)<<painter

Message from Darren.
it,s his father i'm searching for.His marriage certificate to Mary E, indicates his fathers occupation was Private in the Grenadier Guards. I don't know where to go from here. Kind Regards Darren
Darren. To reply on here please use the Add button on your post or the purple REPLY button at the top of the post.
I know its his father you are searching for,but to try and do that you have to work back, which is what I have been doing.
I am not finding him in 1861 at all at the moment ,and neither am I finding a birth for Joseph Henry 1852 ish.
Edit. I see you have replied on thread now, sorry but I didnt think you knew how.

I am totally unable to find a birth for him,but it was nt compulsory to reg births at that time. I am also unable to find him on 1861 or a marriage that could possibly be his fathers.
I am stumped....sorry.
He may of course be illegit and just made up a father but it does not explain no reg for him.
I also dont quite get how he is the stepson of Sarah Duff ! Unless she took him in for some reason. I will have to think on things.
Unless anyone else out there has some ideas???
I know some will be reading this and if you have any ideas please apply them here..:)

This is the only birth that fits any where near any of the places that he says he was born, but may well not be him
Births Sep 1854 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lamb Joseph Wandsworth 1d 398
Maybe the Henry was added at baptism (which I have also not found) or he added it himself?

Sorry Choccy,I dont understand the connection,His supposed step mother and her husband appear to have been married till death.I thought he may have been adopted but he would have shown up in previous census, given that his supposed stepfather, John, was in the Royal Navy. Thanks, Darren

John Duff was married to Caroline, she dies and he Married Sarah Lamb in 1859. Seeing that Joseph is also a Lamb they HAVE to be connected.
And on 1871 census even though John is not with Sarah she says she is married, not widowed so there fore with John being still sort of the head of the house she would put stepson down for Joseph as he would be Johns stepson if he were her son from a previous marriage ,or illegitimately.
But I have to go now as I am tired. Will look in again tommorow and hopefully Choccy>:) or someone elsewill have solved it by then..;)

Think it is worth you getting the marriage certificate for John Duff and Sarah Lamb. Too much of a coincidence that Joseph Lamb is living with the family as a step-son.
It will at least tell you whether Sarah was a Widow and, if so, her father's name, to try and trace her marriage to Mr. Lamb.

Might he have been known as Henry as a child as he had the same forenames as his father?
This entry is for a Henry Lamb, resident at New Road Orphan Institution.

You may well be right there Christina. 1853 seems to be the year of birth he is on most all other census.
Well worth looking into I think.
