I wonder if this is the birth for Betty?

It is humbling when we see the poverty and hard lives of our ancestors.

Thank you, thank you thank hank you. I think Elias had chosen to vanish for a while. I know I read a newspaper report where him and his brother Stephen were sent for hard labour - 7 days for both for being drunk in charge of a horse and cart and he received a further 7 days for having a fight with the man who was supposedly buying rags from them in Cherry Orchard Lane in Eastwood.
Sound like such charming people. I know my grandfather hated his father as his mother had left them with him and when he died they never even put a stone on his grave. Says quite a lot really. I remember as a child being taken to the family graveyard in Essex and his grave being pointed out to me at the edge of the graveyard under a tree and just told somewhere over there. Must have been a cruel man to make his child think such little of him.

I believe that she went of with his brother called Elias Stone. I do not think she changed her name at least she retained some independence in that way. She had a daughter with him called Betty and then I get completely stuck - there may even be another child. By this time she had settled in Eastwood in Essex where many of Romany families settled.
I have been through all the information shown above and have managed to build a couple of levels to my tree now so thank you all.

You are very welcome Jennifer, I thought you wanted to find her with Stephen and his brother but you have not given brothers name. So far I have found her parents family but nothing of her as an adult. Did she change her name at all?

You're very welcome - and the site has indeed changed since 3 or 4 years ago! One more tip -- click on "Edit" in your first post, and then "Submit" (you don't have to change anything), and it will change your username on that post to your current name.
Sometimes we assume that a wife who "ran off" and set up house with someone else was a loose woman. I think it's much more likely in most cases that circumstances were as you described - an unpleasant or abusive husband, and no access to divorce or any support services, so the woman did need to partner with someone else in order to support her kids.
It seems like Elizabeth's parents weren't married, so she would have been registered in her mother's surname but gone by her father's while with the family.
Have you looked at FreeBMD for her siblings' marriages / looked for them in later censuses with family? Once you get their names (minus the mistranscriptions) in your tree and do some tree searches, maybe you'll find some matches. Good luck!

Dear All
My eternal thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I did have some info but because of the surname changes it was difficult to confirm.
I have also taken note of my user name here and have changed it as well.
This is the first time I have posted a request for a number of years so was unaware of the site requirements. My apologies.
Thanks to you all for taking the time to help it is enormously appreciated.
Elizabeth did not have a good life with my great grandfather before she left him and had a relationship and children with his brother and died quite young I believe alone and living in a shed apparently poor thing. I was mainly trying to find out about her siblings and parents and now with the information provided can now fill some gaps in my tree.
I have always been intrigued by her use of the 'Loveridge nee Smith' bit as it was quite common for the children to be given the mothers surname as happened in her case as well and she did this with her own children. Not one of them was named after Stephen Stone. I have loads of info on his side of the family and am happy to share.
Once again my thanks.

Jenny has not opened the PM I sent her yesterday about finding / replying in the thread etc.
Aha, very very low member number. From the days before one could answer in threads, I'll bet. Old email address maybe?? ;)

It is surprising they managed to remember where each child was born.
