The earlier census details look very promising, maybe he was William Henry but went by the name of Henry as his father was William.

Here is Lavinia in 1871

William Henry and Lavinia's children seem to be registered in the name Jinks so it's very strange isn't it?

Ann
Thanks for the tip about the Lancashire Records Office! Just looked and they have a searchable Index (of police) on line and I've just found my ancestor. When you click on the name to view, an automated form comes up so you can e-mail an enquiry. They will respond within 10 working days telling you what info they have and how much it will cost for them to photocopy and send it.

No Jinks at all on there but there is a William Henry Shaw.

Battenburg

Battenburg Report 6 Feb 2010 00:03

my great grandfather changed his name. His grandparents didnt marry so he had his grandmothers surname. After his grandfather died leaving a will gt granddad changed his surname to his grandfathers. All his children were given grandfathers surname.

He first married with both names. As did his sister and his uncle (another child born to the same grandparents)
Various children married with the double name including my gran to her first husband. She then reverted back to a single name on her second marriage cert to my grandfather.

All very confusing till you can find a match. You might have to go further back and see where the name comes from

Gosh, I just found my way back to this link, thanks to a gentle nudge from George.

I am amazed at the mass of information... Let me apologise for not going about this in the corect way. I'm very very new to all this and a bit lost really.
My grandfather died when my dad was only a year old.

I do recal an Aunt Ada and an aunt Emma, but know of no one called shaw? So thats a mystery. I will look at all the information properly tomorrow and try to make sene of it..... Thank you so much everyone.
I will keep you posted.
