I am looking for any information on Mary Ellen Marshall, such as parents or siblings. I know she married my Gt Grandfather Fred Crossland in Sheffield in 1893 and they had several children whilst still living in Sheffield. Mary Ellen's birth was registered Jun 1878. I know that on the 1901 and 1911 census records they were living at 9 Albion Street Sheffield.

Anne, I am sure there were replies on that other thread too. I think that is where the census information came from! Now someone will go looking for it again just for reference.

Yes I did delete the other post as Ann of Green Gables told me to.
I started a new one stating all the information that I know is correct about Mary Ellen Marshall.
I am aware that there is another Fred Crossland that married Mary EllenTurner and they are the couple that lived in Eckington.
The couple I am looking at are Mary Ellen Marshall who married Fred Crossland and they were on the 1901 and 1911 census as I stated as living at 9 Albion Street Sheffield.

Nichola

Can you please post the census records that you have to help us along a bit?

So it looks like the census records that we have found are the other Mary Ellen and Fred?

Nichola

Nichola Report 4 Feb 2010 09:47

What detail do you require as the information I got on the 1901 and 1911 census report was given to me on sheffieldindexers and ancestory.
Thanks

Nichola if you could post the 1901 census as I am having difficulty finding it on Ancestry. If we could see it we may be able to trace Mary Ellen further back - if that is what you are looking for.

Thanks

GillianMac Report 4 Feb 2010 14:05

OK -this is the wrong marriage
Fred Crossland m Mary ellen Turner 1896 Ecclesall Bierlow?

and this is the right marriage
Mary Ellen Marshall married Frederick Crossland 1893 Ecclesall Bierlow?

The only Mary E Crossland I can find living in Sheffield is 38 widowed Charwoman b Sheffield with children named Gibbons as well as Samuel Crossland 1 and John Crossland 2mths
This would seem to imply she was married before to a Gibbons and would therefore have remarried in that name?

GillianMac

GillianMac Report 4 Feb 2010 14:14

And it is obviously not her as she was married to a George Gibbons and he rmaiden name was Scholey

GillianMac

GillianMac Report 4 Feb 2010 14:31

No wonder it was difficult to find!
1901 9 Albion St Nether Hallam
Fredk Crossland 30 Carter
My Ellen 20
Ethel 5
Frank 2
Albert 1 all born Sheffield

GillianMac

GillianMac Report 4 Feb 2010 14:45

I think there has been a fatal mix-up here and it should be Mary Ellen Turner we are looking for
The 1901 record shows mary Ellen to be only 20 and it seems most unlikely she was married at 12!
But if you magnify and look at the figure on the actual image and compare it with a "26" lower down I think that was her age and it fits with the birth of the first child.
There is a Mary Ellen Turner b 1875 Sheffield in the 1891 census , daught er of Thomas and Mary Ann living Heeley (which is within the reg dist of Ecclesall Bierlow where the marriage took place

We have traced Mary Marshall and if she married a different Frederick Crossland then the other one must have married Mary Ellen Turner
but I stand to be corrected!

Nichola

Nichola Report 4 Feb 2010 19:19

Somebody has checked the 1911 census for me and they have Fred and Mary Ellen as been married for 17yrs which would mean that Fred Crossland married Mary Ellen in 1893 and that was the marriage listed for Mary Ellen Marshall. The marriage listed in 1896 was between another Fred Crossland who was born in Barnsley and he married Mary Ellen Turner. I have got really confused as the 2 names and dates are so close together.

GillianMac

GillianMac Report 4 Feb 2010 19:42

OK then I wonder if (given the 1901 location of Nether Hallam) if this the Mary Ellen you are looking for
1881 Nether Hallam
James Marshall 36 Table Blade Grinder
Eliza 35 wife
James 14 Table Blade Grinder
Walter 11
Annie E 8
MARY ELLEN 6
Tom Alfred 4
Eliza Proctor Marshall 2
Florence 4mths all born Sheffield

To confirm you really need to buy the marriage cert for 1893 which will give her fathers name and occupation or better still -if you are certain of the 1878 birth get that cert tho she does not show her age as 23 in 1901

Nichola, what information is on you parent's birth certificate? Does it give Mary Ellen's maiden surname please? Also what is Fred's occupation on that certificate?

Nichola

Nichola Report 6 Feb 2010 07:19

Mary Ellen was my Gt Grandmother, she was my grandfather Walter Crossland's Mother he was born in 1910 and I don't have his birth certificate. I think I will have to send for some certificates after all.

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 6 Feb 2010 10:43

I think that you are right Nichola, send for Walter's birth certificate then you are working from facts. Without that certificate you could spend a lot of time and effort tracing the wrong Fred and Mary Ellen.

While sharing information with other people can be a good thing, you really do need to know their sources and check them out for yourself if you want to be accurate.

When you get Walter's birth certificate can you come back to the thread please and give us the details, even if you don't need more help it is always nice for those that help to know the outcome.

Thank you and good luck with your searching.
