Your right the connection has to be somewhere.
Alice Roberts was registered twice on 1901 cenus. Her birth parents my great - great grandparents died after 1901 and before 1911 they were Edward and Ann Roberts, although in one of the census she was known as Hannah.
In 1911 census Martha Roberts is showing as mother of above i.e Issac Bates. Martha was married to Samuel Bates who is Issac Bates father. I am presumming he died and Martha married George Roberts, who I believe had his own children - maybe also widowed and he had children already. This must be where all the history lies!!!

I have followed Edward back and do not find him with a George at all,I make his father Edward and mother Elizabeth.,but Im not good at making connections !

It has to be there somewhere, but I just cant see it.

Yes ,
Are you sure that Alice is the same child on both the 1901 census?

Seems to be only one birth to fit anyway.

so looking at it again I presume the Bates must have been hers from a previous marriage and the Roberts are his?

Georgina

I'm so confused now does anyone know why the Bates and Roberts were so mixed?

Thank-you for the step son link, I'm being very dense please help me out so if Alice's natural father was Edward Roberts - how does this link him to Issac Bates?

I'm sure the Rosanna Goodyear mariage is right - birth year matches:

Births Sep 1875 (>99%)
GOODYEAR Rosanna W. Bromwich 6b 816

And I think she went by the name of Rose:

Going on the 1891 Isaac is stepson so must be Marthas son I would have thought from a previous marriage for her, which I guess would make him Uncle to Alice?

On 1891 Isaac has a sister called Eliza so maybe this is Dolly?
Pure guess though of course.

Hi,
yes the roberts surname was confusing me how the relationship worked because of the follows. In the 1901 census Alice Roberts was registered at her mother and fathers house but also as a visitor with Issac Bates, Rose Bates, Eliza Goodyear and Elizabeth Goodyear. It is Alice Roberts I am really intereste in, but am trying to work out the link to this family. As they (Issac and Rose) had apoted her (Alice) in 1911 - after her birth parents had died - confusing!!!
