I have a WW1 victory medal awarded to SS 5266 J.T Watson along with his service records.Which state he was John Thomas Watson born 24th july 1896 in Newcastle. I would love to reunite it with his family but where do I start? have searched trees on here and no matches

Is there any indication on the service record of next of kin - mother, father, brother or sister

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 13 Jan 2010 22:27

If you can identify him in war deaths -- oops, was he a WWI casualty? -- the record might name his parents and/or wife.

... I don't see a good match.

unfortunately no, only the ships he served on and when, he was 5ft 5 brown hair blue eyes and a fresh complexion!

JaneyCanuck Report 13 Jan 2010 22:31

Unfortunately, 1901 has

John Watson
Robb, Agnes
abt 1897 Newcastle Upon Tyne Son Elswick, Northumberland

John Watson
Charles S, Sarah A
abt 1897 Newcastle Upon Tyne Son Westgate, Northumberland

John Watson
Alexander, Agnes
abt 1896 Newcastle Upon Tyne Son Byker, Northumberland

Linda in the Midlands

Linda in the Midlands Report 13 Jan 2010 22:32

He survived the war and according to his records, can't read all of it as it's photocopied

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 13 Jan 2010 22:33

I was going to say, if you want to make a project of it, get his birth cert for his parents and have at it! Problem is there isn't a match. This is the best one.

Once yet again, I posted that Gatehead birth already. Nobody reads the threads, do they?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 13 Jan 2010 22:51

Linda -- google maps -- says it's a lot closer than I knew. Basically two sides of the same river. No wonder I've noticed a lot of interchange!

(Like movements from Cornwall to Devon in the Plymouth area, in my own bunch.)

Linda in the Midlands Report 13 Jan 2010 22:52

Ok so if I order the birth cert how am I going to know it's the right one? really would love to give this back to the rightful owner but can't afford to spend loads of money on wrong certs :(

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 13 Jan 2010 22:56

That's the problem, catch 22. No way to know whether it's the right one unless you get the cert, track down familiy for that one, and ask. ;)

That one really is very likely though -- Newcastle is in bigger print on the map so likely he actually grew up there or he just called the whole place Newcastle/

Madmeg Report 13 Jan 2010 23:01

Gateshead is right next to Newcastle. Like half a mile over that scary bridge.
