mgnv,

Thanks for the helpful and valuable info about RGOs.

I didn't know anything about the link to the National Archives catalogue, so that's a valuable piece of info for me.

Liz - technically that list of places isn't a list of subdistricts, but a list of places inside the Woodstock subdistrict.

Go to freeBMD and find a hit in Woodstock registration district, e.g.,

Deaths Sep 1837 (>99%)
BAYLISS John Woodstock 16 94

Now click on the Woodstock link, then the more info "here" link. We see:

WOODSTOCK REGISTRATION DISTRICT
Registration County : Oxfordshire.
Created : 1.7.1837.
Abolished : 1.10.1932 (succeeded by Banbury, Chipping Norton, Ploughley & Bullingdon and Witney districts).
Sub-districts : Deddington; Woodstock.

plus a list of places in Woodstock RD, plus where the regos are now. Woodstock sub-RD was rg9/903 in 1861, and Deddington sub-RD was split between rg9/901 & rg9/902. These #s change each census.

An irrelevant aside - they don't change much in Scotland, which had smaller, parish-sized, RDs. I just looked a family up on FreeCEN for another thread. They gave the piece #s as:
Piece: SCT1841/164 Place: Rathven -Banffshire, & Piece: SCT1851/164, & Piece: SCT1861/164.

Liz - go to http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/Default.asp?j=1
There's a box at top left where I can enter rg9/903
Alternatively, I can "search the catalogue" for, say, Bladon, 1861-1861, rg (for 1841-51 code is ho) and get 1 hit:

RG 9/903 More informationParish: Bladon Hamlet: Bladon Hamlet: Hensington(3) 1861

which I can click on to see a bit more abt it.

Hi Freewheel and mgnv

So sorry to have missed these gems in the past couple of days.

I didn't know it was possible to look up the RG number on the NA as you did, in fact I'm still not sure how you did it, but thank you anyway!

That list of Sub-Districts looks so tantalizing though.

I'm a little comforted by your vote that I'm probably not going mad, but not feeling 100% sane after trying to help ageing parent with Christmas cards at the weekend ...

Many thanks again for your help with the Census query.

Liz - vote retracted

3wheel - just checked and you're right - nothing showing on Ancestry

Previously when I've looked up stuff it's said "(missing)" or something like that, but it didn't here - what I see is (after editting some junk out):

RG 9/903
***Registration Sub-District 2 Woodstock
Parish: Wootton
Parish: Stonesfield
Parish: Combe
Parish: Woodstock
Parish: Blenheim
Parish: Bladon Hamlet: Bladon Hamlet: Hensington(3)
Parish: Begbroke
Parish: Shipton-on-Cherwell
Parish: Hampton-Gay
Parish: Hampton-Poyle
Parish: Kidlington Hamlet: Kidlington Hamlet: Gosford Hamlet: Thrup Hamlet: Water-Eaton
Parish: Woolvercot
Parish: Yarnton
Parish: Cassington Hamlet: Cassington Hamlet: Worton

However when I click on link I ***ed, I see:

Scope and content
Registration Sub-District 2 Woodstock
Covering dates 1861
Availability Open Document, Open Description, Closed For 100 years
Note WANTING
Held by
The National Archives, Kew

I first read this as the note was "wanting", but maybe it's the whole piece instead.

Which ED is covered by RG9/903?

It isn't transcribed on Ancestry

Liz - Just looked up rg9/903 at the NA, and there's no mention of any of this piece being lost, so my vote is for your going mad.

Freewheel - thanks for posting the census - it might help others. It also shows the variations in surname spelling. That, added to the fact that there are so many Maiseys (especially Williams and Jameses!) in Oxfordshire just makes our job more ... interesting??

Barbara - thanks for marriage date - I will look into that one. Just proves my point above! I had William marrying Jane Langford in Mar 1862 (Chipping Norton) - but this might not be correct.

Thanks everybody for your helpful input,

Liz

Hi Lindsey,

There's a member of Ancestry with this family in his tree, but I fear he has added names and details without standing back and looking at all the facts. I've noticed a couple of things that don't look right, so am planning to contact him.

Will check the GR trees - thanks for suggestion.

Lindsey* Report 19 Dec 2009 11:14

It might just be a double entry, have you looked at the original page ?

It's not often names on my tree crop up but I have a handful of Oxford Maiseys right on the edge somewhere. I have seen other trees with them on, try putting him into search trees and you might find a contact.

I haven't bought any certs for this family (limited funds!) but of course that would be the ideal way to find out.

Parish records for Bladon don't seem to be easily accessible online, sometimes you can see people's occupations from those.

One confusing Bladon parish record is for Mark Maisey b. 1856 with parents William and Sarah. Perhaps that's a different family, though.

Freewheel, you beat me to it checking the scans.

I have tried looking for baptisms on parish records on IGI, but no luck.

LizRees Report 19 Dec 2009 11:08

Hi Freewheel,

Yes, I have checked the scanned images (for James, that is). They are consecutive on the list, and with the consecutive page numbers 150 and 151. The handwriting is nice and clear, no ambiguity there.

There are definitely two birth entries - very clear and unambiguous

Have you checked the image(s) for the births?

Many 'pieces' of 1861 have not survived.............
