there is this john in the 1881 who sort of fits with Huddersfield

Anne SEDDON Head W Female 33 Shipley, York, England Provision Dealer
John SEDDON Son U Male 21 Huddersfield, York, England Shop Assistant
James SEDDON Son Male 13 Lancashire, England Shop Assistant

Source Information:
Dwelling 194 Terrace Netherfield Road (N)
Census Place Everton, Lancashire, England
Family History Library Film 1341877
Public Records Office Reference RG11
Piece / Folio 3662 / 27
Page Number 47

On close looking he is deascribed as son of Ann who would only have been 11 years old when he was born! So the whole transcription is a bit suspect. Might be worth consulting the original records.

in fact it is quite difficult to find ANY John Seddon in the 1860's who was born outside Lancashire!

How did your friend get back to John & Ann in the original post? Everything we have found seems to fit the original criteria.

Hi Everyone,

Having spoken to my friend, on whose behalf I am carrying out this research, it would appear that w might have the wrong family!!

According to my friend, her grandfather, John Seddon, was born in 1862. He was 20 years old when he married an Ada Kemp at St Nicholas' Parish Church Liverpool in 1882. The Joh Seddon we have was born in 1868 and would have only been 14 in 1882.

Any ideas?

According to the 1911 census he was born in Huddesfield in 1864. However, I cant find a matching birth for HUdesfield 1864.

incidentally judging by the ref nos the first Ellen & Lydia WERE twins, born in the same year as the first Elizabeth Ellen

Sorry Frank but unsure what you mean by this

'but am puzzled as to how some of the early born children appear on later census records. Were they named after their older siblings?'

Hi

Many thanks to all who have replied to my query. It is much appreciated.

I have managed to sort out the fact that James obviously married widow, Ann Anderton (nee Haydockk) but am puzzled as to how some of the early born children appear on later census records. Were they named after their older siblings? I know that this happened in my own family after an early death.

Cheers
Frank

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 17 Oct 2009 23:41

this could explain it

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1851
ANDERTON John
HAYDOCK Ann
Chorley Register Office or Registrar Attended

Lancashire Death indexes for the years: 1851
ANDERTON John 29 Chorley

so Ann was actually born as Ann Haydock - her marriage certificate to James should prove it

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 17 Oct 2009 23:14

for some reason Alice & John appears to have a different mmn (HAYDOCK)

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1857
SEDDON Alice Chorley Preston HAYDOCK

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1860
SEDDON John Chorley Preston HAYDOCK

edit - actually all the other children also seem to be registered as Haydock as well as Anderton with the same reference numbers - will look further

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 17 Oct 2009 23:10

these are the children with mmn = Anderton

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1861
SEDDON James Chorley Preston ANDERTON CHO/29/88

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1863
SEDDON Elizabeth Ellen Chorley Preston ANDERTON CHO/32/97

of the 3 born in 1856 I would guess Ellen & Lydia are twins as they have the same reference number BUT

Lancashire Death indexes for the years: 1856
SEDDON Ellen 0 Chorley Preston CHO/16/20

Lancashire Death indexes for the years: 1857
SEDDON Elizabeth Ellen 1 Chorley

Lancashire Death indexes for the years: 1858
SEDDON Lydia 1 Chorley
