Hi to all who replied.

I am going to bite the bullet and order the cert for the birth Janet kindly found for me - it has to be the correct one as Hucknall Torkard was in the Basford registration district - and this is the only Basford birth I can find for George between 1880 and 1883. I will let you know of the outcome.

I have found what I think to be George's mother and father on the 1881 census also [thank you again for those who found the family in the 1891 census for me!] - and have looked at possible marriages for a William Butler to an Emma on FreeBMD. Assuming that they didnt marry in a register office [I am not sure when they came into existence?] I can check out the 6 marriages I have found and see if addresses give me any clues as to whether they can be the correct one or not. I have looked for marriages between 1870-1883 because I found this couple in the 1881 census with another younger child who I think must have sadly died as he doesnt appear in the 1891 census.

Have I missed/forgotten anything?

Bingo! .......found them in the 1911 census (Mary had been transcribed as Maryy)

BUTLER, GEORGE HEAD MARRIED M 29 COAL MINER HEWER HUCKNALL TORKARD NOTTS
BUTLER, MARYY ELIZBERTH WIFE MARRIED 8 F 30 LANGLEY MILL DERBYSHIRE
BUTLER, DORRIS DAUGHTER F 10 BASFORD NOTTS

Married 8 years
Address: 12 CHAPEL STREET NEW EASTWOOD NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

Looks like we were looking at the right George!

Presumably, Dorris means something to you?

Hi Londonbelle,

Yes - this does indeed mean something to me - thank you so much!!

Doris is my grandmother!!!! They didnt marry until 1903 so I have not been able to find them as a family and so was not sure of which George Butler to follow - now I have the 'evidence' I need to try to trace his family - now I know that it IS him in the 1891 and 1881 census'

Thank you so much for your help!
