True, can you find Catherine's birth.

Not neccessarily....perhaps her uncle was her mothers brother or perhaps he was her fathers sisters husband,

If her uncles surname was Walby, then her maiden surname must of been Walby. Thats why im thinking was she married before.

Catherines uncle's name was WALBY but her sons name was STRAFFYN OR STRAUGHAN or STRAFFIN depending how it was heard and spelled on the census so could Catherine always have been a Straughan before her marriage to William Smailes?
