Find Ancestors

Please can anyone help me sort out the mystery - I will try and explain all of the information that I have:

I was tracing back from the birth of John Patrick Nicholas Miller born 1877 Newington. His birth certificate has his parents as Richard Miller and Ellen Stow
So now I have started my search on Ellen Stow. She married Richard Miller in 1872 Ealing (she is under the name Helena Stow which is an error). It states that she is 20 years old which puts her birth at 1852. There is no fathers name on the marriage certificate.
Now the confusing part, passed down the family are some old certificates. We have found a blank birth certificate of someone who I assume is Ellen. There is no name on it but does state Girl, born Dec 1852 Camberwell to parents William Crawford Stow and Hermina Georgiana Stow formerly Waller.
However on the 1881 cenus (Ellen Miller is a widow) and is with son John Miller, she is a servant BUT head of house is an Ellen Stow - it says that she is grandmother to the children making Ellen Stow the mother of Ellen and not Hermina............any ideas anyone!!!

Just checked out the marriage for William C Stow and Hermina, it was in Totnes, Devon? maybe someone some time back had ordered the certificate when trying to do the family tree also and just kept it, as it seems they too were looking for Ellen's birth.

There's a few reasons for not putting hte fathers name down,
(1)mother not married so never had a father
(2) Adopted even within family members
(3) abandonded as a baby and bought up in childrens home, a bit like Oliver twist??


Who were the witnesses at the marriage, maybe a family member?

Have you backtracked Ellen Stow snr and jnr on the earlier census?

thanks everyone.........looks like the certificate is a red herring!!!!!!! It makes sense with the Hermina Stow born Camberwell 1852........someone in the family had got the wrong one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Food for thought!

My Husbands grandfather was married, died and registered on all his childrens birth and marriage certificates as James, even in the Census's, his birth name was actually Nathan but never ever used it......

Blossom..........that record of blank girl Stow born Camberwell 1852 must be the one I have but is the same code as Hermina Lydia Stow..

Can´t find a death for Moses Stow, perhaps he left and that´s why he is left off the marriage cert.

Registration did not become compulsory until 1875 so you may never find it . IGI has no baptism either

tree on ancestry by DSMiller is it you?

Moses 1821 -1865 married to ellen maden born 1822 it has the stow family including ellen 1852 going way way back.
