Carol,

According to the census, James says he was born in Leith, Edinburgh.

Found this 1841 census for possible parents to James.

1841 Scotland Census
about Alexander Boyne
Name: Alexander Boyne
Age: 60
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1781
Gender: Male
Where born: Scotland

Civil parish: North Leith
County: Midlothian
Address: Sandport St
Occupation: Mason J
Parish Number: 692/1
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
Alexander Boyne 60
Isabella Boyne 50
Elizabeth Boyne 20
William Boyne 15
Alexander Boyne 10
George Boyne 8
Margaret Boyne 6
John Anderson 25
John Shaw 50
John Shaw 14

Note the fathers name ... Alexander. As James and Mary's first son was called Alexander, this might be a clue that the families were connected. The Scottish naming pattern usually indicated the first born son is named after the paternal grandparent.

The other interesting thing about this census is the address - Sandport St. On James and Mary's 1841 record, you can see they were also living at this address. Maybe another clue.

If this census information were proved to be James parents, this looks likely to be the marriage for Alexander and Isabella.

Alexander Boyn
Isabella Anderson

8th October 1813
North Leith, Midlothian

Helen, I saw those names on the 1941 cencus, as the names below them were the names I was looking for, but looking more closely they may be the same family. Will check.thanks.

St Cuthberts church is the huge church at the west end of Princes Street in Edinburgh, the district of Leith is the docks area of Edinburgh and Leith Street (and Leith Street Lane) run from the east end of Princes Street down Leith Walk to the port of Leith. Sandport Street is also in Leith It is my city so any questions feel free to ask. If you need any clarification on Scottish records let me know and I'll check when I am back at work on Monday
