It gets more confusing.
William and Charles have gone "missing".
Jane Ann (1897) was my mother. Isabella went to Canada and the others are "mine" except Alison, Janet and Christina- as far as I know.
Once again my grateful thanks to you.

Aileen Report 26 Jun 2009 23:41

Did William or Charles have a middle name that you know off?

I know very little about the Nelsons lives in Canada apart from the fact that they lived in Toronto. I looked at the Family Search site which showed that a William Nelson had lived in Ontario and had died in America. What led me to believe that it was my William Nelson was the similarity in ages.
Regards
Robert.

This is the perfect year for a trip, being the Year of Homecoming. :)

It would appear that those 3 didn't all travel together to Canada, though you may already know this.

ScotlandsPeople is probably easiest to get info quickly, even better if you have an idea of when the others were born as you can narrow it down more, can't wait for the 1911 census, will make this timeline much easier to check.

I assume when you say the trail ends you don't know much of their lives in Canada? Though you did mention William dying in America, is there records from that end to be traced?

Robert

Robert Report 26 Jun 2009 15:21

William, Charles and Isabella were all born after 1901 and all emigrated to Canada and there the trail seems to end. I don't mind having trips back home to Scotland, but as you suggest I will try Scotlands People.
Thanks.

Aileen Report 26 Jun 2009 14:40

Have you been on ScotlandsPeople? Might save you a trip, but not the cash!

Were there children born after the 1901 census other than William? May be easier to narrow locations down if there were.

Robert

Robert Report 26 Jun 2009 14:29

You have certainly given me food for thought and I will have to do a bit of digging. Probably have to revisit Scotland.
Thanks again,
Robert

Only solutions I can think of is that either the family moved or that the mother was somewhere else for that birth, or William wasn't his given name at the time the birth was recorded, possibly a middle name. Only Nelson child born in East Lothian in the whole of 1908 was female.

I think I have found the census record you mean, as all the offspring have that place of birth, but I did note that they had probably only recently moved to that address, as it is a different area to where the children were registered and to where they stayed 10 years prior, could it be that job didn't work out so they moved again? There is a william Nelson born in Mid Lothian in 1908 but i haven't viewed that birth for parent's names.

Robert

Robert Report 26 Jun 2009 13:42

Thanks again Aileen,
All William's Brothers and Sisters(including my Mother ) were born in Prestonkirk, East Lothian according to the 1901 Census so the mystery deepens.

Robert

May have struck a problem with that birth record, looks like that William Nelson died in August of 1907.

Aileen

Aileen Report 25 Jun 2009 21:26

Thanks. Aileen.
I have hit a brick wall so far as the only thing I am sure of is that he was born in East Lothian and went to Canada as a very young man. The date of birth I have is obviously wrong, but thanks for your help.
I will start afresh.
Regards,
Robert.

What information are you looking for?

the only William Nelson I could find in East Lothian was born Tranent 01/12/1906 and had the middle name Morton
