Hello

I have received a birth certificate today of Annie Jones who I have been looking for, for what seems like ever!!

Her mother was Emily Jones (formerly LEAR) and her dad was Charles Jones a coalminer. Annie was born 6/08/1883 at Oldland Common, Bitton.

I have been unsuccessful in finding Annie in any census except the 1911 when she was married to Thomas Upton. I have all this info

I cannot find a marriage for a Charles Jones to a Emily Lear.
On Annies marriage cert her father is named Charles so I am sure it is the right Annie.
If anyone could double check marriages for me on FreeBMD I would be really grateful.
At the moment my 5 year old is crying and shouting and driving me nuts but I am so excited I have found her birth

Thanks

Marcelle

Marcelle, whereabouts is Bitton please?

Hi Jan

On birth cert it says Oldland Common, Bitton (and underneath it looks like Glos Road)
When I spoke to the records office they said at this time it came under Somerset and the birth cert has the reg district as Keynsham

I have also checked Glos, Bristol and Barton Regis

Thanks
x

Hi Jan

I just looked on FreeBMD and can't find the marriage either. It could be a case of mistranscribing so it may take some searching

Good luck

Just found myself looking at this......

I can see a birth that fits for Lily, but not for Annie.

The census looks really interesting. One family member told me that Annie had a sister Lil who married a chap and lived in Weston and then eventually moved to Canada where her son became a mounted police officer

I then spoke to my dads cousin who lived with Annie Jones (UPTON) as a child but he said he thought her sister was Alice

Alice & A Lily

Andy, I think that is a brilliant bit of lateral thinking! It would be worth looking at Annie being registered as Annie Jones (see above) but her parents being unmarried. Possibly Charles married already I wonder? I see this Emily is supporting herself in work.

The Alice shown in 1881 census is a boarder, so could be sister for Emily perhaps?

EDIT: just checked 1871 Emily and Alice are from seperate families, so maybe cousins.

Charles Jones, born 1856 Kilmersden Somerset, living as lodger at Portishead, Somerset. Coalminer unmarried

Emily Lear age 20 living at Bitton with family. She is a daughter, unmarried and a rag cutter. Her father Alfred is a coalminer!

Any help?

Thankyou everyone. You have given me some avenues to go down

Any pointers on which way to go first

Once again a HUGE thanks

NUDGED

From what Andy and every one else found for me it is a strong possible that Emily was not married to Charles and fibbed on the birth cert.
I thought I would try and find Annie Jones/Lear and Emily Lear in the 1901 census but again no such luck. Would any one please mind double checking me on the 1901 census before I rip all my hair out?

If they can't be found in 1901 I will order Lily Lears birth cert and see who the father is on that. I checked IGI and it has a baptism in 1888 I think it was but Lily was born 1879 and mum was Emily Lear but no dad noted

Many Thanks

Marcelle

EDIT

Thanks to all who helped me on this one. Have had contact from a cousin of my dads and told him I had Annie's birth cert but that I could not find a marriage for her parents Emily Lear and Charles Jones. He said "I shouldn't bother looking as I don't think they married"! aghhh wish he would have told me earlier. And then an Aunt told me she could remember her grandad calling her gran Annie Lane (Close to Lear, dont you think)?! Funny how things crop up. My Aunt remembered this whilst in bed at 3am!!

Yes I saw she was single. Can find no marriage for a Lear to a Jones on FreeBMD or Ancestry. Neither could anyone else who looked that is why I thought that maybe they never married and Emily fibbed on the birth cert and went by the name of Lear and not Jones. Not 100% sure if you could fib in them days. I have also checked Bitton & Keynsham baptisms and marriages on line. Her father Charles was dead in 1904 when she married Thomas Upton. I also checked for an Emily Lear in the Bristol/Glos/Som area in 1911 census but no sign of her

Marcelle, fibbing was easy back then! We have relatives - including those in living memory -who were extremely "flexible" with their names!

Thanks Jan, it is driving me nuts! I think I will order Lily's birth cert and see if there is a dad on there and hopefully it was Charles. Her birth cert ties up with her marriage cert and I know there was a Lily. She married a bloke from Weston and in one of the census Lily born in Bitton is a servant in Weston Super Mare so its looking possible its the right gang lol
Have to be careful as there were a few Lears from that area and also another Emily but born in 1861 not 1856 ish. There is quite a bit on the net about the other Emily...typical
