The census looks really interesting. One family member told me that Annie had a sister Lil who married a chap and lived in Weston and then eventually moved to Canada where her son became a mounted police officer |

Might be totally wrong but look what I found in 1881 |

Andy, I think that is a brilliant bit of lateral thinking! It would be worth looking at Annie being registered as Annie Jones (see above) but her parents being unmarried. Possibly Charles married already I wonder? I see this Emily is supporting herself in work. |

The Alice shown in 1881 census is a boarder, so could be sister for Emily perhaps? |

Yes I saw she was single. Can find no marriage for a Lear to a Jones on FreeBMD or Ancestry. Neither could anyone else who looked that is why I thought that maybe they never married and Emily fibbed on the birth cert and went by the name of Lear and not Jones. Not 100% sure if you could fib in them days. I have also checked Bitton & Keynsham baptisms and marriages on line. Her father Charles was dead in 1904 when she married Thomas Upton. I also checked for an Emily Lear in the Bristol/Glos/Som area in 1911 census but no sign of her |

Marcelle, fibbing was easy back then! We have relatives - including those in living memory -who were extremely "flexible" with their names! |

Thanks Jan, it is driving me nuts! I think I will order Lily's birth cert and see if there is a dad on there and hopefully it was Charles. Her birth cert ties up with her marriage cert and I know there was a Lily. She married a bloke from Weston and in one of the census Lily born in Bitton is a servant in Weston Super Mare so its looking possible its the right gang lol |
