Hi

I have a marriage cert for Euphemia Mckenzie in 1907 she married Paul Mclean she was 22 so born in 1885 married in Cathcart she was a domestic servant, her parents are Charles Mckenzie a crofter and Mary Mckenzie. I have tried to find her in the census with no avail, i am hoping if someone could help me to find her with family and where she was born.

There is a family of Mckenzie's with parents Charles and Mary in the census who i thought was my family but someone researching that family say its not my family i have spent a fortune on certificates to be told i have resarched the wrong family.

If someone please could help me with this i would be more than grateful.

Regards Alan

I have some credits for Scotlands People; but I have to go out now. If no one else has been able to look for you, I shall look later.

Thank you Alan

Hi Alan

SP records are a wealth of information - you say on Euphamia's wedding certificate her parents are Charles and Mary. Did they say if father was deceased? also they should have stated mother's maiden name.

With this information you can then trace parents wedding certificate, where they were living, and census docs.

Did you check this possible death on SP Renfrew Eupemia McLean 1958 aged 73 years, (born 1885)

bye Helen

Hi Alan

I had a look at the marriage cert and it does not appear that her parents were married as there would be a date below the mothers maiden name of when they did acutally marry, also I have had a look at the records for a marriage too and nothing shows up but it should as they must have married after registration became compulsory,. Alternatively they could have moved over from Ireand I have a lot of releies in my tree at that time who did just that.

Jackie

edit sorry my mistake it is birth certs that give parents marriage

You will only find the date of the parents marriage on a birth certificate.

This is a long-shot. Although Euphemia's marriage certificate says she was born c.1885, it is not unknown for people to fudge their ages.

Outside chance this could be her.

If the 1881 census were to be proved correct, this could be the same Euphemia in 1901. Does her marriage certificate state what her occupation was ?

Hi Helen,

Thank you for your in put that is the line i followed but been told that i have the wrong one Euphemia was a domestic servant on her mariage cert.

Euphemia husband was also born in Snizort so i thought that was a good connection also the one you have found parents names were the same as mine.

Thank you Alan.

Helen

Helen Report 3 Jun 2009 21:03

Were you given a reason why you were following the wrong family ?

I would say the occupation of Euphemia on the census and the marriage certificate matched.

Also, by process of elimination, I found the parents of the family on the 1881 and 1901 census were:

Charles McKenzie and Mary McDoanld.

Alan

Alan Report 3 Jun 2009 21:17

Hi Helen,

Yes the reason was their Euphemia married a William Cumming in 1906 and yes the parents of that Euphemia is Charles and Mary Mcdonald. Also the marraige of my Euphemia her parets are Charles and May mckenzie.

I have the details of my Euphemia daugheter mariage she married in 1936 and one of her witnesses is Mary Mcdonald. Could be coicindence but i am really am stuck on this puzzle.

Thank you again Alan

Ths is a difficult one.

It's odd that your Euphemia can't be found in any of the census. Only the 'other' Euphemia.

I began to wonder if William Cumming may have died and Euphemia re-married quickly. On Scotlandspeople, there were 2 deaths registered for a William Cumming in Inverness between 1906 and 1907. This theory is probably too far fetched ....

Don't suppose you recognise a naming pattern from your Euphemia's children and the names mentioned in the 1881 census. Sometimes a clue.

Other than these suggestions, I can't think of any new leads.

Will have another look into the census, just in case something crops up.

A lovely name Euphemia.

And I came to the same conclusion as both you and Helen.

Thank you again Alan

You may already have trawled through the possible births (1883 - 1887)

Euphemia McKenzie (6 matches) /

MacKenzie (2 matches)

Unfortunately, as you well know, this is a hit and miss scenario which can cost a fair amount of money in credits.

If you live near Glasgow or Edinburgh, you can have unlimited access to all BMD's and census for a whole day for £10 in Edinburgh ... a bit dearer in Glasgow

I'd keep an open mind on Mary's maiden name being McKenzie. There's a slight chance Euphemia may not have known her mother's name and just took a guess. This has been know to happen.

Good luck in your further searches.
Helen

Alan

Have had another look at SP and I have to agree with the others I think that you do have the correct one. Firstly its not your run of the mill name and the fathers occupation on the census matches the marriage cert, the mothers maiden name being down as the same as her married name could very well be an oversight of the registrar at the time.
The marriage was registered in the district of Cathcart which is only a stone throw away from Govan where it looks like she and her sister stayed on the census.

Contrary Mary Report 3 Jun 2009 23:14

This looks as though it is the same family as found on the 1881 census - very unusual name for the now 14 year old? Could this be the Euphemia who was aged 3 in 1881?

If you think this could possibly be the right family Alan, it might be worth spending the credits on SP and having a look at the original image.
