Does anyone have any information on the Dignum family who were based in Battersea?

You need to give chrisian names and dates.

I'm especially interested in William Dignum b1840 who married Sarah Cape in 1841. They and their subsequent family were all based in Battersea. I've found William's father James who was born in 1821 and married Harriet ? in 1839 in Southwark but I'm not sure about James' father. There appears to be another Dignum family in the Clapham area and I'm trying to establish whether they are actually connected to mine via James Dignum b1821.

I hope this makes sense.

Sorry everyone!! I didn't realise there were any replies.

Yes, that's definitely the family I'm looking at although I'm not sure whether it was Harriet Payne or Steed that James married. I haven't been able to find James' brother William b1816 on any census returns etc and have just asked Jackie to do a look-up before I realised I had so many replies here.

I can't find any other children of James and Harriet apart from William b1840 and have traced the line down through him. I'm pretty sure that Harriet died in 1851 and wondered whether James remarried. All of William's family settled in Battersea and I've just got a hunch that the Dignums who settled in Clapham are connected somehow. (There seem to be three main areas that the Dignums originate from - either Northwich, Mile End and Wandsworth.) I think that William b1816 or any further children of James and Harriet may be the link.

It's easy to check for replies, not that this site makes it easy to find that out.

Click on "My threads" on the left side there and you'll see any thread you've started or posted in, with any thread that has recent replies at the top.

As to which Harriet James married (I didn't realize I'd missed one there), only James's marriage certificate, or a child's birth certificate, will say for sure. And of course the marriage certificate will name his father, if he knew it / his parents were married.

In many cases the possible brides can be traced backward to see which matches the details for the person after marriage, but in the case of an 1839 marriage, that won't work. ;)

I must admit I hadn't noticed the "my threads" but I'll be making use of it in future :)

I have searched for both Harriet Payne and Steed in the IGI to see if it would be worth getting the marriage certificate but there doesn't appear to be much of interest. I don't think that even if I had the certificate I would progress much further with her line. I've also come to a dead end with Phililp Dignum so thought I'd have a look at William (1816) - another dead end.

I'll just keep searching but many thanks for your help.

I have James Thomas Dignum' s birth certificate, as I thought it might have been in my Dignum family.

My Dignums are in Greenwich, then Northfleet at this time.
Francis Dignum, married to Mary Hope 1843 Greenwich St Alphage
First child John Francis Dignum, b 10 sept 1844 Northfleet. The next fourof her children were illegitimate.
I cannot make a direct connection from my Dignums to Judith with my current data.
