Patience = Sometimes the results can be quick (as you have probably seen on the thread boards) and they can also be a long term search. When posting your message put ALL the info you have its frustrating to "post" and then be told "I already know that".

Perserverance = Sometimes this will be necessary to find who you are looking for. If you don't get any results the first time round why not bookmark your thread - left side of the page - and then you can then always reinstate it to update or "nudge" back onto the boards.

Proof = Always try and "prove out" any inforrmation given

Privacy = Remember when looking for "living relatives" these boards are an open forum and as such great care should be taken when putting information on them.

Precise;= dont waffle on about things that wont help you find the info you want. Keep it clear and use gaps to break down your info. A mass of sprawling text puts people off reading

Politeness = Well that speaks for iteself. A please and thank you is always appreciated

Regards Paula

Paula,
To keep it going up the board.

Another couple of 'P's.

Punctuation and Paragraphs.

I tried to read a thread the other day all in lower case not a false stop in sight, words just ran into each other, I gave up in the end.

Huh. I see someone took offence at my suggestion that posters list names and birthdates in Point form.

Huh.

Excuse my ignorance janey what is Point form?

Proof reading I applaud -many's the wild goose chase I've been on with misinformation!

I mildly suggested that it's easier to read names and dates in a list, like:

John Smith, 1850
Mary Brown, 1850
children
Jane Smith, 1872
Billy Bob Smith, 1875

You know how it sometimes goes:

they had children mary ann jane charles william.

Mary Ann? Mary, Ann? ...

Lists is good! But I'm sure I'm breaking a rule by saying so ...

I agree it is much easier to read names or at least statements in point form

I know the first time I posted on the board I put the info all in 1 paragraph. Someone asked me to set it out better as it was confusing. I was quite upset at first as I thought it was OK but re-jigged it & realised how much easier it was to take in the info given. (being brought up in a v economical way I was trying to save space!!!)

Maybe you can strike a happy balance with Sylvia (our Canuck one), who uses entirely too much space!

Lists are good - I couldn't live without them!

They help one to Prioritise :)
