Somebody might like this challenge ...

My auntie had a Gt. Grandmother who originated from France (possibly the South), and who probably came to England to work as a domestic servant.

She married a man with surname Miles - possible birth year for this couple is around 1860. We think Mr. Miles came from the Stroud area. Their eldest daughter, born between 1883-1887 was called Agnes Mary Miles, I found two on FreeBMD but not sure which is the correct one (Derbyshire or Middx). The daughter married Percy Philip Pearce in 1907.

The challenge is that I'm trying to find the correct spelling of the French lady's name. It sounds like "Du Dyer", but could be "Du Dier" or even all one word, e.g. "Dudier".

This French lady (Mrs. Miles) died quite young, and is believed to be buried in Castle Coombe in Wiltshire.

If anyone has any suggestions as to how I might find out more about this lady, I would be most grateful.

I know it's a long shot!

Many thanks

Sue

Take care.

English enumerators were not famous for the accuracy of recording English names. They wrote them like they heard them. Spelling was not considered important. I have read a document with six diffrent spellings of the same name ranging from Bragginton to Brakynton and Brockington.
It must have been even more difficult for them to record a French name.

Christine

That's a very good point you have made about the spelling of surnames. The most confusing one I ever had was 'Weedon', which had been written as 'Thurdon' - no wonder I couldn't find it on the Census and it took a couple of you wonderful GR researchers to solve that one!

It's quite logical that the enumerators would have more difficulty with a French name.

I'm amazed by what you have found about the French surnames.

Thank you again

It would be best if you got the birth cert of Agnes Mary Miles now you know she was born in Derbyshire.

This is something you know is true. Hopefully her mothers surname is easy to read
