*♫*♥*Janice*♥*♪* Report 3 May 2009 16:08

We have found out that my mother & her 4 siplings ( one older, 3 younger) were not fathered by her mothers husband, as he died 2 years before she was born. She is 85 years old & was always told by her mother that he died in 1931, when in fact he died in 1921 from wounds he received in the first world war.
Mum was born in Norwich & her mothers name was Gertrude Laura Roe, husband Charles William Roe. The children concerned were born in 1920, 23, 26 twins, 30.
All children except the oldest has the middle name of King.
Mum & her siplings were taken to a family of Kings who lived at no 4 Ashby Road in Norwich, they were told they were family friends. One of these had to be the father but how do I find out who. Im I trying to find out the impossible or could you advise me on a possible way that may help.
If you need anymore info I will try to give it.
My cousin has been seaching for the answer in Norwich but seems to have come up against a brick wall,
I hope you can help, many thanks, Janice

Have you got your mother's birth cert or any of her siblings birth certs? If so who is named as the father on them?

KathleenBell Report 3 May 2009 16:24

Unless the Kings are still family friends then I don't think you are ever going to find out.

You could check the electoral registers for the address in Norwich and see how many males were registered there - but the father of the children may not have lived there - it could have been grandparents that the children were taken to visit.

Hi, Yes I have all there births certs & there is no father entered. Mum always had the small version, so didnt really think anything of it.
The eldest child is Ronald Edward Roe, & the others all have King as their middle name.

Sorry about the delete that was me, pressed the wrong button.

Difficult one this! The only thing that I can suggest is that it might be worth getting a copy of Gertrude Laura's death certificate as the Informant might be a 'King'.

I have that too, mums eldest brother, who really was Charles son was the informant. My cousin is mums eldest half brothers daugther.
Your right, it is a difficult one,
thanks,
Janice

Note that Gertrude & Charles married in 1910 so there's a possibility of more half siblings

Possibles?

Thats right, we have Ivy Lottie Laura Roe born 1911 died when she was 6.
Also Gertrude Roe born 1915, she died 2006.
William James Blake the eldest half sipling born 1908 died 2006.
We found Reginalds grave & marked it & Charles was burried with Ivy, which we marked too. Both these graves had been unmarked.

My nan really did have a rough time.
She lost her baby son in 1911, her mother died in 1915, her 6 year old daughter in 1917, her father gased himself in her house in April 1921 and her husband Charles was shot in the spine & paralized in 1918, then died in 1921 after being in hospital for the last 3 years.
Then she told her children that their father was her husband & died in 1931. Mum doesnt find it too hard to believe as she never remembered a father living with them but she does find the lies her mother told her difficult to believe. She even took mum to Charles grave & told her he was her father.

HI,
I have found Edward 1878 living at 84 North Walsham Road Norwich with his wife Ethel Elizabeth & his sons George Henry, Edward and William. He appears to have had 6 children with only 3 living.

Thank you for the 1911 census, Edwards middle name is Carr, which fits as they probably read it wrong.
It was Ashby Street, its me, cant think why I put Road, just to confuse things I expect, sorry about that.

I cant seem to find anything at all for the other children.
Henry (Harry), John, George, Alfred or Edith.
They seem to have just vanished.

Hi Janice

I'm back again .....

Do you know when your mother and siblings were taken to live with the King family?

When did Gertrude Laura die?
