KAY Report 29 Apr 2009 05:51

I have only just logged on again and overwhelmed at response. Will try NZ historical index to obtain bith certificate of Annie. I have death certificate. Also birth certificate and death certificate for WH Carter. Annie was my brick wall. I have a congenital condition that must have come from Annie's family so keen to investigate. Thank you all so much for the info you have given me. Could find no record of a marriage - some rumours that Annie and Willoughby never married and my nana and her siblings were illegitimate. Thank you again
Kay

Looks like Willoughby Jnr wasn't as honest as his father

ROCKHAMPTON, October 22 1882

Willoughby Harcourt Carter, late clerk for
Wright, Heaton, and Co., at Bogantungan, has
been remanded to that place on a charge of
embezzling a cheque for £315.:

Rotter! What's even worse is that I can find a marriage for Annie, but Willoughby appears to have had several, grrrrrr

In 1856 the Government passed an Act making it compulsory to establish a paid police force in the country. On the 6th February 1857 the Buckinghamshire Constabulary was established. Thirty-two candidates applied for the post of Chief Constable and at the Epiphany Sessions held on the 6th February, Captain Willoughby Harcourt Carter was appointed as the first Chief Constable of this Force. The Force was to see another four Chief Constables before it amalgamated with Oxford City Police, Oxfordshire Constabulary, Berkshire Constabulary and the Reading Borough Police on the 1st April 1968 forming the Thames Valley Constabulary later re-named the Thames Valley Police.

That's a pretty distinctive name Mr. Carter has, I must say.

In the English GRO there are only:

Googling

"willoughby harcourt" carter

http://www.mkheritage.co.uk/bch/docs/bconstab.html

Aha. You need someone with Australian Ancestry access, or Australian electoral roll access otherwise:

http://search.ancestry.com.au/cgi-bin/sse.dll?&gsfn=Williouby+Harcourt&gsln=Carter&db=auselectoralrolls&&gss=SEO&hc=20

"All Australian Electoral Rolls, 1901-1936 results for Williouby Harcourt Carter"
(note the misspelling)

Williouby Harcourt Carter
gender
1903
Victoria Balaclava city

and several other years where the name is spelled correctly -- and there are numerous other Harcourt Carters.

The details of those records might reveal Annie?

Well, she definitely died in NSW in 1949.

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/search?event=births

15814/1949
CARTER ANNIE MOFFATT

mother's given name GRACE
district PADDINGTON

If the person who registered her death knew her personal details, there should be some info on her death certificate. Apparently they did not know a lot -- or she was born to an unmarried Grace Morton. It would be worth getting the certificate or a transcript (e.g. from Joy Murrin) to see what it says.

Or perhaps that's where you got the info in your post. ;)
