Find Ancestors

Please can anybody help in tracing my Great, Great Grandmother's maiden name. Her name was Sarah-jane and she was born around 1857. She married John Knott who was born in 1854. They were from Manchester. They had two children, Emily in 1877 and Charles in 1879. I would be grateful for any help....Many thanks.

John was born in Salford so this could be his birth

As far as i know John's parents were Charles and Mary. I found him on a census so his year of birth could be 1853/1854. I think the Sarah Sperit is the most likely one to be his wife. It's an unusual surname so hopefully I will be able to find some info on her. thanks for all your help.

I think you need to buy the Marriage Cert before you make a decision like that.
Sarah refers to herself as Sarah J throughout the census records and was born in Ardwick as was Sarah Dwyer.
Sarah Sperit or Spirit wasn't and was just Sarah.
You must check everything before you continue or you will be following a completely wrong line.

The only information I have is Sarah-Jane, born circa 1857 in Ardwick Manchester. From what you have found out, if she is a Sperit, Spirit, Spiret, it looks as though her surname has been mis-spelt over the years so that could make it more difficult. Thanks for your help and advice.

You really must buy the Marriage Certificate Rachel. It will tell you the name of John's father and Sarah's Father. It will cost you £7 from the GRO.
There are so many John Knott's born at that time you need to be really sure you have the correct one and you need to be sure that the one you think it is was actually born in Salford and didn't just move there later.
You do really have to confirm what you think you know with actual evidence in the form of a certificate of birth or marriage.
Check and double check everything!
There is no point in creating a family tree if the information it contains is wrong.

I am going to order the certificate. I was getting slightly confused! I've know looked on freebmd rootsweb as suggested by somebody else and now see how the info is obtained. I guess John Knott is a very common name too and it could take a while to find the right one. If I get the right one first time, that will be great. If not. I will keep searching.
