Victoria Report 1 Apr 2009 13:09

Hi Christine,
Thank you. Yes i'd seen it.
I know that James died between 1881 - 1891.
Her age changes. I'm wondering if she had lied about her age with there being a big gap in their ages. Also thinking that maybe the previous post with regards to his death will have been him and he too lied about his age.

Name: James Charles Gregory
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1817
Year of Registration: 1883
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Age at Death: 66
District: Chesterfield
County: Derbyshire
Volume: 7b
Page: 441

Stories, stories, stories!
I believe there was a will. Money was left for charles and Polly. My aunts told the story of them being too young and it being put into trust. Once they were of age they went to find out and it had gone. My aunt always said it had gone the wrong way!! Apparently it was the family solicitors that had dealt with it.
I haven't found anywhere good to look for wills.
When James died, one of the children possibly Polly went to live with her elder sister who treat her like a servant.
Polly is already Asquith in 1891 census so i'll possible never know unless there are cousins out there that can retell this story.

Anyone????

Vicky

Victoria Report 1 Apr 2009 12:52

Hi all,
Thank you again,
The 1881 census are deffinetley my ancestors. Polly was my grandads mum. Charles William was her twin brother. They were born on 1 May 1873.
Shelton was the name given to me from my g aunts. I myself have queried this name.
Familysearch.org does give Jane Shelton as the mother on the birth of polly (Mary) and Charles.
Does anybody know where they get there information from and if there could indeed be a mix up.

Vicky...... Still hunting!!!

Are you sure they were twins?
I found Polly and she is one of 2 girls with that reference.

There are several possibilities for Charles in the close time frame but not an exact match.

This is a submitted record in the IGI:

RICHARD GREGORY
Christening: 25 AUG 1807 Old Brampton, Derby, England
Father: WILLIAM GREGORY
Mother: JANE
Batch Number: 7212941

Same parents, in that batch:
ANNA GREGERY
Christening: 10 AUG 1800 Old Brampton, Derby, England

But a general search for births, parents William Gregory and Jane, Derbyshire, 1800-1840, produces those four siblings, but doesn't produce a James. The mother is given as Jane Shemwell.

Those records are all submitted. I wonder, if James was indeed alienated from the family, whether whoever did the research didn't know about him?

There are other Gregorys in Brampton in 1841 of course ... so they're probably related, but more distantly.

Someone at GR has this person in her tree:

Hannah 1811 Alport, Nr Bakewell, Derbyshire

Now that you know James gave Alport as his place of birth, might be worth a contact.

EvieBeavie Report 1 Apr 2009 02:08

James was in Brampton in 41 and 51.

This is an interesting household in Brampton in 71.

Richard Gregory 63 - unmarried, farmer of 40 acres
Ann Gregory 70 - unmarried, annuitant
Thomas Gregory 60 - unmarried, butcher
John Gregory 54 - unmarried, farm labourer

Richard is head, and the others are his siblings.

They seem fairly prosperous, and they're in the right place, and they seem to be all confirmed bachelors/spinster! I wonder whether they're your James's siblings.

I'm not understanding about the marriage.

This is what FreeBMD shows:

Marriages Dec 1861
Sheldon Robert Melton M 7a 497
Shelton Jane Melton M 7a 497

That's the only Jane Shelton marriage, and there's no James Gregory marriage. - ?

That's the one I had just above there, Victoria. ;)

And got him back to 1841 -- but unfortunately he was a loner up until he appears with the kids!

Rereading your first post, it seems the children were James's and his (first) wife's. That certificate would give you her name -- it would just be easier to look for them in censuses with that info.

And if there were older children who would have been present in 1871, e.g., and you know their names/birthdates, that would be useful.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 31 Mar 2009 23:44

Sadly, bells very seldom ring around here, despite the hopeful posts. When a cousin does spot a cousin on the discussion boards, it's generally time for a large celebration, it happens so seldom. Generally speaking, we have to do the slogging on our own. (Anyhow, in my experience, if you find a cousin, they're at least as likely to want what you have as to have more stuff to offer!)

You believe Jane is a Shelton -- they never did marry? No record at FreeBMD that I see.

Were the children Jane's? That would be the way to be sure: get a birth certificate or two.

Do you know who his previous wife was? If so, their marriage certificate would provide his father's name.
