Sally Report 29 Mar 2009 17:36

I wonder if anyone can help? I am trying to find the date of marriage of my great x 3 grandfatherJean-Louis (John Lewis) Gabriel Charles Meyer (born c1800 (France)) who married a Rose Barroux, presumably some time before their first child Alphonsine Violette was born in 1831 in Edinburgh (all info obtained via IGI). I am guessing the marriage would have been in Edinburgh.

Jean-Louis Gabriel Charles Meyer was, until recently, thought to be just plain old Charles Meyer. I am also trying to find the date of marriage of Jean-Louis' second child, my great x 2 grandfather, Charles Theodore Hippolyte Meyer (super name!) born 26 Mar 1833 Edinburgh who married an Irish woman Ellen born c1826 (according to the 1871 census). Presumably they married before the birth of their first child Charles G Meyer, in Knaresborough/ Harrogate Yorkshire in 1860.

Any help or pointers gratefully received. I have scoured all the websites as much as I can but don't have a subscription to Ancestry and BMD and pay-to-view is proving very expensive when I don't know precise dates. Very many thanks in anticipation.

Alphonsine birth is on Scotlands People 23 July 1831 county/district Edinburgh City parish Edinburgh.

Marriage for a Charles Meyer on 22 May 1852 in the same county and parish but you will have to buy credits to view the entry to see if it is the correct one.

Hello all,

Many thanks for the help

Jacqueline - thank you for the info re Alphonsine which unfortunately I already had. However, I didnt have the info re the marriage of her father so I will buy credits for Scotlands People - it looks promising.

Alviegal - thanks for that - I didnt have some of that info but the mothers name of Clemence has confused me somewhat as the births of certainly their first two children show their mother's name to be Rose Barroux! and I've never heard of Gabriel, Napoleon or Edward! I did ascertain yesterday that Rose Barroux died some time after the birth of the third child, Louisa Laura Meyer in 1837, and that he married another lady Eugenie Armspert/armspach and had certainly one child from that marriage - John Henry Phillip Meyer 1842. Perhaps Gabriel, Napoleon and Edward were children from the second marriage. If so, that's brilliant. I must therefore assume that Eugenie is also Clemence! It will take me a while to digest all this!

Thank you both very much indeed. I seem to have been sent off on another branch of the tree!!

You're my hero! Now I know more about Charles G Meyer but also the maiden name of his mother. Brilliant!

many many thanks.

You've probably discovered that there are loads of Meyers in the Harrogate area in the census' - all of them are related I think - it just needs putting altogether!

The earlier date I gave you I presumed was perhaps a marriage for the brother.
Charles second marriage could be 13 May 1842 same parish and district if you key in

male surname Meyer
first Charles
Spouse arm* using the wildcard to allow for different spellings there is a marriage on this date

Jacqueline,

Hi, I've just been on Scotlands People, paid credits, and obtained the following info

13/05/1852 Charles Meyer married Eugenie Armspach/FR6023
22/05/1852 Charles Meyer married Emma Francis/Baldwin FR7139.

Without obtaining the certificates, which I'll have to do, I know that the top entry is my (Jean-Louis Gabriel) Charles Meyer's second marriage. Heaven knows what the second entry is - perhaps it is a third marriage!?! It can't be his son Charles Theodore Hippolyte's marriage because I know that he married Ellen Wilkinson some time before the birth of their first child Charles G Meyer in 1859. Unless, perhaps, he married Emma Francis/Baldwin before marrying Ellen Wilkinson?!

The plot thickens. Is it any wonder my hubby wonders why the house always needs cleaning/dusting etc!!>!

Hello Quoy

Thanks for that - you do well for a one fingered typist - keep going!

The Leeds Paper info is brilliant! Two new addresses I didnt have

Dont know the connection to Somerset yet! Looks as though that Meyer was from New Zealand. Mine appears to be from France - family lore is that it was Alsace Lorraine.

Jaqueline -

I have paid to view on Scotlands People and got a super printout of the banns for Charles (Jean-Louis) and Eugenie in 1842. Thinking about this more deeply, Eugenie was shown as single but living in the same house in Harrogate in 1841. They got married in 1842 in Edinburgh! . The second marriage of a Charles Meyer to Emma Frances Baldwin has confused me. As Charles seemed to go back to Edinburgh to marry his second wife Eugenie, then perhaps he did it again and married Emma Frances Baldwin there in 1852. However, she doesnt show on any census' which makes me think that perhaps it isnt the same Charles Meyer. I'm not sure how I can pin this one down. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

By the way, thanks again to you all for your super help.

Your last posting has confused me more. I had Edward Meyer as being born in Jan-March 1860 (from FreeBMD – Mar 1860 Vol 9a, Page 104) although admittedly I havent asked for a copy of the certificate. The 1881 census stated he was born in Scotland in 1863. I had presumed this was just due to the usual problem of incorrect ages on census returns.

However, now we have a date of 11 SEP 1862 Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland for him.

CONFUSED!

Sally, I think the Edward Meyer birth you found in 1860 is the one on the 1861 census, son of Charles and Clemence. Perhaps they all returned to France when Charles died? Have you found his death? Again certificates are the answer.

I think I'm spreading my net too wide too fast!

I'm busy writing inputting all the census info and then will try to work out where all the other names fit in. Seems odd that Gabriel, Napoleon and Edward (perhaps children from the third marriage (after Rose Barroux and Eugenie Armspach) have never been mentioned or seen since.

Charles (ie Jean-Louis Gabriel Charles Meyer) died 1872 in Harrogate. I've a photo of his MI. His older son Charles Theodore Hippolyte Meyer (half brother to the Gabriel Napoleon and Edward I think) didnt die until 1897 in Ilkley. Surely the three younger children (as above) would have been seen on the 1871 census before they went to France (if indeed they did).

Emmas's father was called Henry and if they were following the pattern for naming children after fathers one would have the name too. Unfortunately I cannot remember if it is his father that the first child is named after and then hers for the second, but I noted that there is a Henry Meyer on one of the census.
