Okay...

Amos Barlow marries Laura (?) - probably sometime before 1854. They have 5 kids and are living together in 1881:
Amos Barlow 30
Laura Barlow 27
Louisa A. Barlow 16 (my great great grandmother)
James Barlow 8
Amos Barlow 6
Dinah Barlow 3
Henry Barlow 11 months

Amos dies sometime between 1871 and 1881 as Laura (?) is a widow in 1881. James Barlow visiting her.

James Barlow marries a Laura Vials in 1864?

Louisa Ann Barlow marries Joseph Brown in 1887

In 1901 James and Laura (presumably nee Vials) are living together with 8 kids:
James Barlow 52
Laura Barlow 54
Diana Barlow 23 (poss. Dinah - Amos's child)
Henry Barlow 21 (poss. Amos's child)
John Barlow 19
Edward B Barlow 18
Thomas Barlow 17
Joseph Barlow 15
Laura Barlow 12
Annie Barlow 10
James Thompson 20

So... anyone got any suggestions?

I'm wondering if the James Barlow m. Laura Vials in 1864 is a mistype, and it's actually 1884... that would make more sense... Although I still don't know where James fits in. I'm assuming he was a brother or cousin of Amos who Laura married after Amos died...

I suppose it's also possible both Amos and James married 2 different Laura's. Then when Amos dies and something happens to Amos's Laura as well, so James and his Laura take in the children... bit of a stretch that though probably!

So... plan of action...

1. I need to try and find a maiden name for the Laura that Amos Barlow married.

2. I need an earlier census for Amos, to see if he had a brother called James.

3. Death certificate or date for Amos would probably be useful.

Phew... time to do some digging!

That's what the census records say but I took a look on Ancestry and someone has these people in their tree and they have James Barlow marrying Laura Vials in 1864 in Dewsbury and that he was born in Durham and she was born in 1845 at Market Harborough, Northants and baptised 6th dec 1845 at Clipston to John Vials (1815, Kelmarsh, Northants and Ann Dodson (1816, Arthingworth, Northants)

If it's of any help, the person who has these people in their tree list all of Laura's children but puts a question mark beside each of their names.....I don't think that they really know what's going on either.

Might be worth bearing in mind that one of their son's Edward, has the middle name Burnside....might at some point be significant.
Have to go of line now..........for now I'll leave you to cope with the imminent headache.......take two paracetamol now !!!

Hi Seaham Lass,

Just trying to make sense of all the names!..

From the 1871 census we get:
Amos Barlow 30
Laura Barlow 27
Louisa A Barlow 5
So i'm assuming Amos and Laura are Louisa's parents.

In 1881 Liversedge Laura is listed as a widow, and there's a James Barlow 33, listed as visitor (so James is possibly a relative?... Amos's brother maybe?).

Then in 1901 you have Laura and James apparently living together, but a bunch more children...

Am I reading that right?

Hi, i'm struggling a bit to find a surname for my great great grandmother Louisa. She was married to Joseph Brown b. 1865. Their first child (Florence) was born in 1889, so i suspect the marriage was sometime a few years before that. Would have been in the Liversedge area of Yorkshire.
