FannyByGaslight Report 14 Jul 2009 18:56

The Norman Macleod that I put up was on Ancestry and is Ishbels brother ,so his parents have to be Kate and Donald, just as it says on the ricewallace tree.

Events overtake me ...

I was off visiting the cancerous -- surprising the mum by walking into the hospital waiting room on Friday where she was waiting for her second-last radiation treatment, spending the weekend visiting her and the sister, who has her ileostomy reversed next month, then accompanying mum back to the big city on the hospital shuttle bus and leaving her for her last treatment while I caught the bus home. Five hours of motion sickness; worst intercity bus driver I've ever had ...

We went in to the big city early on Monday and met up with my mum's recently deceased cousin's son to talk about good old Ernest (our mutual gr-grfather). Apparently Ernest belonged to a men's fraternal order called the Hindu Kush that my first cousin once removed is planning to revive, hm.

So that's the Monck/Hill update, and I shall check out Aubrey, and I have nothing of any value to say about McLeod!

Oh Janey this all sounds rather serious, and all Ive done is lost Diane

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 14 Jul 2009 19:37

The cancerous family? Have no fear, they are both doing well! The mum's early lymphoma treatment is almost over, but we still have to know the outcome; the sis's advanced colorectal cancer treatment is also all over, and seems to have been a great success. It's been just over a year since they both came down with it, so things are looking way, way up!

Now the Hindu Kush, I have to say my rather odd first cousin once removed does sound serious about that, and actually it strikes me as pretty silly. ;)

Evelyn Report 14 Jul 2009 19:53

I have no idea what Hindu Kush is

Hindu Kush means Hindu Slaughter
By Shrinandan Vyas

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All the Encyclopedias and National Geographic agree that Hindu Kush region is a place of Hindu genocide (similar to Dakau and Auschwitz). All the references are given. Please feel free to verify them.

ABSTRACT

All Standard reference books agree that the name 'Hindu Kush' of the mountain range in Eastern Afganistan means 'Hindu Slaughter' or 'Hindu Killer'. History also reveals that until 1000 A.D. the area of Hindu Kush was a full part of Hindu cradle. More likely, the mountain range was deliberately named as 'Hindu Slaughter' by the Moslem conquerors, as a lesson to the future generations of Indians. However Indians in general, and Hindus in particular are completely oblivious to this tragic genocide. This article also looks into the reasons behind this ignorance.

Not a very nice thing then by all accounts.

Well let me know what you find! Google has never found me anything. The Hindu Kush is a mountain range, apparently where the Hashishin came from -- the fierce hashish-smoking cult from which we get the word "assassin".

In Canada, presumably elsewhere, it was a fraternal order of men who had fought in the Anglo-Indian wars who did good works, like the Masons only less successful, apparently. ;)

edit -- Viv -- sources!!!!

That one has what we might call an axe to grind, methinks, and may not be quite the most impartial source in the world when it comes to inter-ethnic conflicts of the past! (That's not what the name refers to in my context, anyhoo.)

I have a few friends who have family in Stornoway. What was your mothers maiden name? If you let me know I will ask my friends to ask their families if they know anything. Not all of their relations stay in stornoway now.
