Find Ancestors

Please can someone help in finding the death of Catharine Anderson, born 1788 Newburn Parish,Newcastle, married John Anderson, of Hanover, at All Saints Newcastle on Tyne in 1811, had son John George 1811.
I sent for what I believed to be her death certificate ( in the hope of learning whether John was still alive) but it was wrong one , it showed her to be widow of William,a farmer. Death date was 1841 Longbenton. I have looked on NBI, & Free BMD but cannot see anyone close enough in age for her. I am assuming she was still in the Tyneside area, but maybe wrong.
A fresh pair of eyes on this would be appreciated.

Hi again Kath, have just looked on NBI & age is given as 41yrs, of Longbenton. This would make her only 11 when her son was born, & she is of full age on marriage license. I'm wondering now if people were allowed to marry at an earlier age then ? & if ages have been correctly given ?

Thanks for the lookup but not sure if these are the right ones. John the son was born in 1811 & married Frances . Have all census on his family in Middlesex. I'll follow up on the 1848 death.

I don't think you can rely on ages at death always being correct. I have much more recent death certificates where the age at death is anything up to 5 years out. It all depends on the informant's knowledge and people didn't place so much emphasise on birthdays in those days.

The age for marriage right up until 1927 was 12 for girls and 14 for boys with parental consent (although very few would marry at this age).

Hi Kath,
Don't see the 1848 death on NBI. I'll see what else I can find on this date. If it is her she should show up in 1841 census somewhere. Amazing that people could marry at such a young age as late as 1927 ! John Anderson was a Mariner so doubt he'd have been that young. Thanks again

Jane , is it from the church records you have the date of John and Catharine's marriage? if so what was her maiden name do you know.... it might just help to know it in case she was staying with a relative on census night ?

I got the details from the Diocese of Durham records for the license for marriage entry.John is of age 21 & above, as is Catharine NESBIT. A witne4ss was Johnathan Scott, a yeoman of same area ( All Saints,Newcastle, County of Newcastle upon Tyne & Diocese of Durham..
The paper shows they were Sworn on the Holy Evangelists.

this could be her on the 1841 for All Saints?

yes this could be her. Does she show up any later.
PS also got her details from Tynemouth Strays, relating to their son's birth.Gives her as native of Newburn Parish.

No that isn't the death.That Catharine is only 14mths old according to NBI

ah right well now you mention Newburn this is the one in the workhouse I mentioned the age is a bit out but then they often are!

Thats great. Is there a listing detailing the inmates for the Sunderland Workhouse? It doesn't state whether she was a widow.Wonder how long she was there. I was looking up about the Newburn Parish ,& see that there was a cholera epidemic in 1832 which killed 66 people.

this is the full list, but I have just noticed (oops) that there is a Thomas Anderson listed also! and they are married so it is sadly not her!

Hi Rambling Rose,
Thats a pity. I was just searching the Free BMD .There's a Catherine Anderson 1870 Gateshead age 82 death , which makes it right for year of birth. but its not on NBI. Will have to work out where she was before I send for another cert !
