Once again I have seen a post from a panicking person who cannot access their tree online for whatever reason.
We all put in a lot of hard work on our trees so take this advice whether your tree is big or small.

Download a GEDCOM of your tree and store it away from your computer.

you can update as needed.

At the bottom of the page is a green bar and within the sections is a panel that shows "import/export" ..............click on that and follow instructions.
Actually, the file will be sent with an e-mail attachment. Download the file into "My documents". You can then put the Gedcom into whatever family tree programme you want to.

Berona

I just tried this, and, yes, indeed it went back to Import/Export .... but it did say in the top line Tree Status: Awaiting Export

It is supposed to be sent to my email address, so I guess I wait and see how long it takes!

most if not all family tree programs have an export/import gedcom 'button' on genes reunited as alan said go to the bottom of this page and click on import/export gedcom, the next screen choose export and wait a short while, the gedcom file which is only a small file will be sent to your email address that you have registered with genes reunited.
you can then use this file as you would others i.e. save it, copy it, to do basic things with it you need to import it into your family tree viewer of which there are many, advice about them is given all over these message boards.
back to my original advice JUST KEEP A COPY OF YOUR GEDCOM SAFE update it by saving a copy as you do more work and feel that you have done enough to worry about losing it???????
hope this helps

hi it is now 1918 hours in spain and like you i have requested a gedcom download and i have been waiting at the moment 35 minutes which is longer than i have had to wait before so i am just going to email genes support i am sure this will be sorted but it is still (when it works) a sensible way to save your tree.

Sometimes the GEDCOM do take a while to arrive. I've waited a couple of days in the past.

As previously mentioned. click on "export gedcom" and your tree will be saved as a file and sent to your e-mail address.
You can save this on a DVD, CD, OR MEMORY STICK

To import a tree gedcom from another program into genes re-united, click "import" then you can `browse` through your files and folders untill you find the relevant tree to be imported.
If on a disc or memory stick then browse to `computer ` and CD drive or removeable memory untill you find the relevant tree to be imported
The same applies to importing any tree gedcom into any other Family Tree program

The importance of this becomes all too real when,as in my case, four trees all shared between Legacy and FTM vanished when my Windows computer curled up and died.
I felt like doing the same!!!!!!!!!!!
As I had done a lot of work on them during four months off with a badly cut hand, it was quite a blow.

DON`T PUT IT OFF,JUST DO IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Takes a while but I have mine typed up on excel and saved to a stick- however must say I lost all my programs ect due to a very bad virus but as tree on here is saved to genesreunited it was here when I came back. I had to reload everything but the tree was safe.maybe people panic too much- genes kept my tree safe for me

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 18 Feb 2009 01:41

Frank

I did all that last night

it came up showing Tree Status: Awaiting Export

10 minutes later it said Tree Status: Normal

This morning, it said Tree Status: Normal

Right now it says Tree Status: Normal

But nothing has appeared in my home email box .......... and my address has not changed

That's getting on for 24 hours

Now, I really don't want multiple copies of my tree being forwarded from GR, for one thing, I don't think my server would like it!!

I wonder how long I should wait before I try again???

i am not advocating that this is the be all and end all but it helps and may one day be a "life saver"

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 18 Feb 2009 20:13

Mine arrived at 1:14 am this morning my time (that's about 9:14 am UK time I think), but was diverted to spam mail. However, I do check my spam mail once or twice a day, so I caught it as soon as I turned the computer on this morning.

Berona .... what are you going to with 7 copies ?? :)))))
