If he said he was older to enlist ..................

it is possible he went under another ID

some used their older brother's birth certificate.

Espana Report 14 Feb 2009 14:59

I AM TOLD HE USED HIS OWN NAME AND WAS AWARDED MEDALS BUT I WAS ALSO TOLD HE FOUGHT ALONGSIDE HIS OLDER BROTHER WHO ALSO SURVIVED. I WAS HOPING THAT PERHAPS THERE WAS A COMPLETE LIST OF ALL THE SALFORD PALS AVAILABLE THAT FOUGHT ON THE SOMME.

Salford Pals
* 1st Salford Pals (15th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers)
* 2nd Salford Pals (16th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers)
* 3rd Salford Pals (19th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers) converted to a 'pioneer' battalion
* 4th Salford Pals (20th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers)

The 1st Salford Pals attacked in front of Thiepval on the 1st of July 1916, and although a few men did reach the German lines they were captured or killed by the Germans and most of the men did not even get that far, but were cut up by machine-gun fire from Theipval. They lost 470 men as casualties from the 624 who attacked. Men from 'B' and 'C' Companies of the 2nd Salford Pals were ordered up to support them, but were forced back, again by machine-gun fire, sustaining over 200 casualties. The 3rd Salford Pals suffered badly from machine gun fire as they moved up to the front on the 1st of July, and the remains of the battalion withdrew to Authuille at midnight.

Well, I don't know if this is 'your' Albert but it IS the one who was injured in 1916, yet it doesn't look like the one who joined the Army in 1919?

Perhaps it will help:

From National Roll of the Great War - Salford 1920.

THOMPSON, A, Private, Lancashire Fusiliers
Volunteering in June 1915, he landed in France in the following January, and was in action on the Somme.
Wounded on July 1st, 1916, he was invalided to Bristol Hospital. Later he took part in several engagements
in the Arras and other sectors, but was again wounded on the Somme in August 1918. After receiving hospital
treatment at Lichfield, he was demobilised in February 1919. He holds the General Service and Victory Medals.
73 Robert Hall Street, Salford.

Hi Dea

I saw that one BUT he would have only been 14 ............born Nov 1900

Still,
Before 1914 school leaving age was initially 11/12.
From 1914 school leaving age was 14

I agree FAIRTHORN.

I think we have a case here of 2 Albert Thompsons being confused together.

What we really need is some more info from Cynthia - Are you there Cynthia?

To add info to this thread - click on the purple 'reply' button at top of thread and type it in the box.

We need to know if Albert's parents were Christopher + Margaret, or possibly Alice + James Edwin?

Did he ever connect to an address on Gt. Clowes Street, or Robert Hall Street.

In fact - what info do you have on him please?

Can you tell us what else you have on this family?

What was Albert's brother's name - was it Archie?

Do you have any details of other family members?

I have some info from 1911 cencus but need to know what I am trying to confirm or disprove?

MY APOLOGIES PERHAPS THE WRONG DAY TO POST MY MESSAGE FOR HELP. VALENTINES NIGHT IN SPAIN SO JUST RETURNED FROM MY EVENING OUT. VERY GOOD MEAL!

YES ALBERT HAD A ELDER BROTHER ARCHIE (born in France) parents Christopher and Margaret and the address Clowes Street Broughton I can see appears on other certs in 1920/21. His brother John was supposed to have joined with him in 1914.
Can you please advise me where you have obtained the information on Albert Thompson of 73 Robert Hall Street to confirm his parents names. Thanks Cynthia

Dea Report 15 Feb 2009 08:48

Glad you enjoyed the meal Cynthia - I used to spend a lot of time in Spain working as a Tour Manager (The 'real' Spain - not the 'touristy bits!') - I REALLY miss those 'lovely meals'.............

Anyway, the info I looked at was from 1911 Census site - It is 'pay to view' so I haven't looked at the actual images but by a process of elimination managed to come up with the following:

1911 - 50 Gt. Clowes st:
THOMPSON ALBERT M 1901 10 Salford Lancashire
THOMPSON ARCHIE M 1892 19 Salford Lancashire
THOMPSON CHRISTOPHER M 1863 48 Salford Lancashire
THOMPSON FRANCES F 1896 15 Salford Lancashire
THOMPSON MARGARET F 1864 47 Salford Lancashire
THOMPSON MARGARET F 1890 21 Salford Lancashire

Couldn't get it to do a house number at Robert Hall Street but there appear to be a few Thompson families on this street - these are all of their names but I don't know who lives with who or at what number:

1911 - Robert Hall Street - all households:
HOUSEHOLD THOMPSON ALBERT EDWARD M 1902 9 Salford Lancashire
HOUSEHOLD THOMPSON ALFRED M 1885 26 Salford Lancashire
HOUSEHOLD THOMPSON ALICE F 1880 31 Salford Lancashire
HOUSEHOLD THOMPSON ANNIE F 1868 43 Salford Lancashire
HOUSEHOLD THOMPSON ELIZA F 1850 61 Salford Lancashire
HOUSEHOLD THOMPSON ELSIE F 1906 5 Salford Lancashire
HOUSEHOLD THOMPSON EMMA F 1856 55 Salford Lancashire
HOUSEHOLD THOMPSON FLORRIE F 1909 2 Salford Lancashire
HOUSEHOLD THOMPSON GEORGE M 1861 50 Salford Lancashire
HOUSEHOLD THOMPSON JAMES M 1851 60 Salford Lancashire
HOUSEHOLD THOMPSON JAMES EDWIN M 1877 34 Salford Lancashire
HOUSEHOLD THOMPSON LIZA ANN F 1888 23 Salford Lancashire
HOUSEHOLD THOMPSON MARGARET ELIZABETH F 1907 4 Salford Lancashire
HOUSEHOLD THOMPSON WILLIAM M 1895 16 Salford Lancashire
HOUSEHOLD THOMPSON WILLIAM ROBERT M 1911 1 MONTH Salford Lancashire
1
............

I did pick out the Albert Edward and these seem to be his 'family:

1911:
THOMPSON ALBERT EDWARD M 1902 9 Salford Lancashire ***
THOMPSON ALICE F 1880 31 Salford Lancashire
THOMPSON FLORRIE F 1909 2 Salford Lancashire
THOMPSON JAMES EDWIN M 1877 34 Salford Lancashire
THOMPSON MARGARET ELIZABETH F 1907 4 Salford Lancashire
THOMPSON WILLIAM ROBERT M 1911 1 MONTH Salford Lancashire

This then looks like it might be the marriage of his parents?

marriage:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages Mar 1901
Baguley Albert Harold Barton I. 8c 830
**JONES Alice Barton I. 8c 830
**THOMPSON James Edwin Barton I. 8c 830
Wood Frances Caroline Barton I. 8c 830

........................

Of course, it could be that one of the other households on the street had a son Albert who is not actually living with them on 1911 census? - You really would need to pay to look at the images and follow them back to 1901 to confirm.

The site for 1911 census is:

http://www.1911census.co.uk/

It costs about £7 for 60 units - It takes 10 units to view a household transcription and 30 to view the actual image.

Hope this helps,

Dea x

P.S. - The info from National Roll of the Great War can be found on:

http://www.spinningtheweb.org.uk/bookbrowse.php

You will need to look in the Salford section, not the Manchester one.

Hi Dea thank you very much for the 1911 census transcripts. I do have pay units for the 1911 census returns so could check BUT I can see that 50 Clowes Street is the family of my relative. I did the initial research work on the family some three years ago so recall all the siblings names etc. I am very grateful for all the help you and other kind people have given me. I will now write to the daughter of Albert and hopefully she will accept that her Father did not fight (she should be thankful that he was saved this misery) I would have doubted he could have survived the Somme 01/07/1916 with the Salford Pals as the record shows.I will send her the website address for the National Roll of 1920 Salford thanks again.
Sorry about last night and as you can see we live in one of the quiet areas of Spain when I say quiet I mean still Spanish which as you will know does not mean quiet !! just less spoilt by the tourist or should I say fish and chip shops! Thanks everyone who helped Cynthia

You are very welcome Cynthia.

Out of curiosity, you say:

"as you can see we live in one of the quiet areas of Spain" ?? - I don't see anything to tell me that?

which bit exactly? (or approximately, if you prefer?)
