Hi Dea thank you very much for the 1911 census transcripts. I do have pay units for the 1911 census returns so could check BUT I can see that 50 Clowes Street is the family of my relative. I did the initial research work on the family some three years ago so recall all the siblings names etc. I am very grateful for all the help you and other kind people have given me. I will now write to the daughter of Albert and hopefully she will accept that her Father did not fight (she should be thankful that he was saved this misery) I would have doubted he could have survived the Somme 01/07/1916 with the Salford Pals as the record shows.I will send her the website address for the National Roll of 1920 Salford thanks again.

Anyway, the info I looked at was from 1911 Census site - It is 'pay to view' so I haven't looked at the actual images but by a process of elimination managed to come up with the following:

Of course, it could be that one of the other households on the street had a son Albert who is not actually living with them on 1911 census? - You really would need to pay to look at the images and follow them back to 1901 to confirm.

YES ALBERT HAD A ELDER BROTHER ARCHIE (born in France) parents Christopher and Margaret and the address Clowes Street Broughton I can see appears on other certs in 1920/21. His brother John was supposed to have joined with him in 1914.
Can you please advise me where you have obtained the information on Albert Thompson of 73 Robert Hall Street to confirm his parents names. Thanks Cynthia

Well, I don't know if this is 'your' Albert but it IS the one who was injured in 1916, yet it doesn't look like the one who joined the Army in 1919?

THOMPSON, A, Private, Lancashire Fusiliers
Volunteering in June 1915, he landed in France in the following January, and was in action on the Somme.
Wounded on July 1st, 1916, he was invalided to Bristol Hospital. Later he took part in several engagements
in the Arras and other sectors, but was again wounded on the Somme in August 1918. After receiving hospital
treatment at Lichfield, he was demobilised in February 1919. He holds the General Service and Victory Medals.

* 1st Salford Pals (15th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers)
* 2nd Salford Pals (16th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers)

* 4th Salford Pals (20th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers)

The 1st Salford Pals attacked in front of Thiepval on the 1st of July 1916, and although a few men did reach the German lines they were captured or killed by the Germans and most of the men did not even get that far, but were cut up by machine-gun fire from Theipval. They lost 470 men as casualties from the 624 who attacked. Men from 'B' and 'C' Companies of the 2nd Salford Pals were ordered up to support them, but were forced back, again by machine-gun fire, sustaining over 200 casualties. The 3rd Salford Pals suffered badly from machine gun fire as they moved up to the front on the 1st of July, and the remains of the battalion withdrew to Authuille at midnight.

I AM TOLD HE USED HIS OWN NAME AND WAS AWARDED MEDALS BUT I WAS ALSO TOLD HE FOUGHT ALONGSIDE HIS OLDER BROTHER WHO ALSO SURVIVED. I WAS HOPING THAT PERHAPS THERE WAS A COMPLETE LIST OF ALL THE SALFORD PALS AVAILABLE THAT FOUGHT ON THE SOMME.

If he said he was older to enlist ..................

it is possible he went under another ID

some used their older brother's birth certificate.

CAN ANYONE HELP ME FIND WHETHER ALBERT THOMPSON FOUGHT WITH THE SALFORD PALS IN WW1. BORN NOV 1900 BUT BELIEVED TO HAVE SAID HE WAS OLDER BY 3/4 YRS.
HE SURVIVED THE WAR BUT WAS INJURED AT THE SOMME JULY 1ST 1916. I HAVE TRIED SEARCHING THE MILITARY SITE ON ANCESTRY AND CANNOT FIND HIM SERVING IN THE ARMY TILL 1919 BUT HIS DAUGHTER WAS TOLD OTHERWISE SO WE ARE TRYING TO PROVE WHAT THE TRUTH COULD BE.
