This is all I have. Herbert Henry Nolan b.1886 in Myrtleford Vic Australia d. 1964. married Annie Chant b. Eng .d. 1955. Herbert's parents were Hopton Thomas Julius Nolan who married Anias Estelle Mandowit ( not sure of spelling, could be Mandouit or Mandonit ) . I am hoping there is someone out there who knows of this family and can tell me more about them. Leonie

EvieBeavie Report 12 Feb 2009 04:09

Leonie may have fixed it since you saw it, but I think it says she was born in England and died 1955.

I wish people would remember we don't pay by the word here, and write things out a little more clearly and fully!

And put things in lists, instead of in run-on sentences ...

do you think this is her?
if so we can check the 1911 census.
children were ages 3 & 1

Cherilyn Report 13 Feb 2009 07:21

Hi again

Since my last post I have found that Annie CHANT was actually born in Urana NSW in 1884 (parents Samuel & Rosetta; these names match those on her death reg in 1955 in Albury). Her father Samuel was also born in NSW, in 1854 to James & Mary, and died in Albury NSW in 1915. His wife Rosetta (nee MOTT) died in Albury in 1930; they married in Albury in 1874. See www.bdm.nsw.gov.au

Samuel's parents James (33) & Mary (32) arrived in NSW aboard ‘Sea’ in 1849 with children George (10), William (7), Luke (5), Ann (born on the ship) as assisted immigrants. Going by the IGI, James CHANT married Mary BUNTER in 1837 in Dorset, UK.

Now to Herbert Henry NOLAN - born 1885 in Acheron Vic. His parents were Hopton Thomas NOLAN & Anais MANDOUIT/MANDONIT/MANDUIT.

Hopton married Anais in 1884 in Victoria (reg 351). This certificate may be worth buying, if only to find out her parents/birthplace. The marriage reg shows she was born in Heathcote but I can't find it in Vic (there is a reference to her on the IGI as born to Jules & Mary - if this is right he was born in Bordeaux France in 1840 and arrived in Australia in 1854. But you need the actual certificate to be sure before going off on what may be the wrong track).

Hopton & Anais had the following children:

1. Hopton Thomas Julius b. 1884 Acheron Vic, m. Bertha Julia HUMPHRIES 1909 Wagga Wagga NSW, d. 1960 Tumbarumba NSW

2. Herbert Hy who you know about already

3. Henry E b. 1889 Albury NSW, d. 1889 Albury NSW

4. Calvill Wm b. ?, d. 1964 Balmain NSW

According to his marriage reg, Hopton Thos NOLAN was born in Beechworth Vic; BUT there were actually 3 Hopton NOLANs born around the same time (2 of them in Beechworth), and all were cousins! Quite confusing...

In a nutshell, it all started with 4 brothers who came to Victoria in Oct 1852 as unassisted immigrants aboard Serampore. All were sons of Hopton NOLAN & Ann ALLEN.

They were:

1. Chas James (aged 19 on arrival), m. m Jane HARTLEY 1854, d. 1900 aged 66 Wangaratta Vic
2. Hopton (aged 21 on arrival, shown as Hoplin), m. Jane DE ST LEGIER 1856, d. 1910 aged 82 in Tarrawingee Vic
3. Wm Fredk (aged 23 on arrival), m. Margaret RAYNARD 1856, d. 1910 aged 79 in Beechworth Vic
4. Thomas (aged 25 on arrival), d. 1889 aged 63 in Tarrawingee Vic

All three of the married brothers had a son named Hopton (after their father). It is very hard to narrow down the right one. So you may need to order the marriage certificate as I mentioned to find out for sure.

I have more if you would like to PM me by clicking on my name in this post, and I will sent it to you.

Cheers
Cherilyn

PS The ages on arrival from the immigration record don't all tally with age at death, but they are very unreliable, so go by age at death instead to work out approx year of birth!!

Anyone with access to the 1851 census? Maybe Hopton & Ann NOLAN will be easy to find, with his unusual given name..? :And sons Wm, Hopton, Chas & Thos -)

EvieBeavie Report 13 Feb 2009 16:30

The IGI has submitted records showing Hopton Nolan born c1830 in Dublin (that will be the one Sue found in 1851) and Hopton Nolan born c1800 in Ireland, married to Ann Allan.

For what they're worth!

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 13 Feb 2009 16:43

Someone has also submitted info to the IGI apparently taken from death certificates:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/igi/search_igi.asp

searching for father Hopton Nolan, mother Ann (no other info needed)

William Frederick Nolan
Birth: 1831 , Dublin, Ireland
Death: 15 JUL 1910 Beechworth, Victoria, Australia
Burial: 16 JUL 1910 Beechworth, New South Wales, Australia*
Father: Hopton Nolan Family
Mother: Ann Allan

* That must mean Victoria?

There's a submitted record showing him as born abt 1820, Dublin.

And:

Charles James Nolan
Birth: About 1834 Abergavenny, Monmouth, England
Death: 11 SEP 1900 Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia
Burial: 12 SEP 1900 Tarrawingee, Victoria, Australia
Father: Hopton Nolan
Mother: Ann Allan

There is also an actual extracted record showing a child of Hopton Nolan and Ann Allen -- another couple by the same names would be unusual! - in England.

AN NOLAN
Birth: 26 NOV 1823
Christening: 01 FEB 1824 Saint James Pockthorpe, Norwich, Norfolk, England
Father: HOPTON NOLAN
Mother: AN ALLEN
Batch No.: C044471

For Hopton Nolan + Ann, in one of those "I" batches that usually look like someone did transcribe parish records, just not "officially" for the LDS:

Maria Nolan
Christening: 07 JUL 1816 Maidstone,Kent, , , England

Ann Nolan
Christening: 28 JUL 1822 Maidstone, Kent, England

Those do look like they must have been a coincidental couple.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 13 Feb 2009 16:50

This Charles Nolan in 1851 matches the one in the IGI:

Name: Charles Nolan
Age: 17
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1834
Relation: Visitor
Gender: Male
Where born: Abergavenny

Civil Parish: Liverpool

Maria Bourne 31
Theresa Bourne 16
Emily Bourne 2
Charles Nolan 17
Sarah Ann Chapman 19

Maria Bourne = Maria Nolan shown in the IGI:

Name: Maria Bourne
Age: 31
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1820
Relation: Head
Gender: Female
Where born: Maidstone, Kent, England

I'm wondering whether this is circular.

Did someone researching the Charles Nolan who died in Australia find this one in 1851 and decide he must be the same Charles Nolan? And then, knowing that the Australian Charles Nolan's parents were Hopton Nolan and Ann Allan, decide that they were this Maria Bourne's parents too?

If that's so, it's a good demonstration of why not to trust submitted records in the IGI!

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 13 Feb 2009 16:57

The only Nolans in Abergavenny in the censuses appear in 1861 and 1871:

Name: Thomas Nolan
Age: 33
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1828
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Ellen
Where born: Ireland
Civil Parish or Township: Abergavenny

There may be a different set of Irish Nolans altogether in Wales, and the Charles in 1851 might be one of *them*.

Leonie's Nolans include a Thomas who went to Australia, and so her Thomas is not this Thomas -- unless he returned to the UK before 1861 and went back to Australia before his death in 1889 ... which seems highly unlikely ...

Yup.

There they are! Ann is widowed, presumably.

No, wait -- "Hopter" is at the top of the list -- that's obviously Hopton senior, 40, with his age mistranscribed.

And I think some total idiot really has invented all of the Nolans in the IGI, i.e. claimed Maria Nolan Bourne and her brother Charles as children of Hopton Nolan and Ann Allan.

There's no marriage in the GRO for Maria Nolan + Bourne, unfortunately.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 13 Feb 2009 17:18

Checked the image for 1841.

Hopton Nolan (the elder) is very clearly shown as aged 40.

His occupation is: Army P.

I surely hope Leonie comes back to see what everyone has found her!

The IGI submitter had it right for the Chants.

Marriages Dec 1837
BUNTER Mary Sherborne 8 171
Chant James Sherborne 8 171

Danged nice of them to get married only weeks after registration of marriages started -- and to register their marriage!

That certificate will give their fathers' names.

I'm not seeing them in the 1841 census. Searching for Cha* ... Here they are.

There aren't any Bunters in Sherbourne in 1841 old enough to be Mary's parents, but this might be a brother:

Richd Bunter 30
Ann Bunter 28
Sarah Bunter 8
Robert Bunter 6
Jane Bunter 1

More submitted info in the IGI:

Mary Ailes BUNTER
Birth: 03 OCT 1819 Puncknowle, Dorset, England
Christening: 14 NOV 1819 Puncknowle, Dorset, England
Death: 10 FEB 1891 Black Range, , New South Wales, Australia
Burial: 11 FEB 1891 Germanton, New South Wales, Australia

James Chant
Christening: 04 MAY 1816 Sherborne, Dorset, England
Death: 23 OCT 1876
Burial: Germanton, New South Wales, Australia
Father: George Chant
Mother: Elizabeth Noake

First son was George; could be true.

In any event, it certainly seems that someone else has been interested in this family. Maybe they've all been posthumously baptised now.

Leonie -- google

"Mary Ailes BUNTER"

You'll find several trees with her on the net. And also, there seems to be an excellent Online Parish Clerk who has put the real stuff on line:

http://www.opcdorset.com/PucknowleFiles/PucknowleBaps2.htm

Pucknowle
Baptisms 1801 - 1836
Transcribed by Judy Hodges

Mary Ailes BUNTER Daughter of James & Anne; Labourer; 1819 14 NOV; Puncknowle
Timothy BUNTER Son of James & Anne; Labourer; 1817 21 SEP; Puncknowle

The only Chants in that batch are children of William and Martha.

I'm going to leave you to do some yourself, because it is more fun.

http://www.opcdorset.com/

Sherbourne BMDs.

You'll find more information about the marriage of James Chant and Mary Bunter if you look at

Marriages at the Parish Church
1830-1849

and the marriage of Mary's brother Timothy is just above it in the list. ("otp" means "of this parish")

You can probably now spend hours browsing the parish registers for Chant and Bunter ancestors and relations.

Cherilyn Report 14 Feb 2009 07:18

Well done EvieBeavie & Sue!

To repeat: Samuel's parents James (33) & Mary (32) arrived in NSW aboard ‘Sea’ in 1849 with children George (10), William (7), Luke (5), Ann (born on the ship) as assisted immigrants.

Looks like the chn were born in Sherborne which fits with the 1841 census, some possibles below from FreeBMD (Luke Bunter CHANT has to be the right one!)

Births Sep 1839 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chant George James Sherborne 8 90

Births Dec 1841 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chant William Sherborne 8 92

Births Sep 1844 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chant Luke Bunter Sherborne 8 92

Ann was born on the voyage across.

Then in Berrima NSW they had:
Samuel 1854-1915
Elizabeth 1856
Richard 1858
Robert 1862-1940

Luke died in Narromine NSW in 1911;can't see a marriage for him. George James married Eliza Matilda IZARD in Berrima in 1863 and died in 1908 in Bowral NSW.

Ann married Isaac MANNS in Berrima in 1868; she died in Albury in 1918.

Robert married Martha MUDFORD in Berrima in1885.

Interestingly it looks like Richard married a Grace BUNTER in Berrima in 1880! She must be dau of Wm & Elizabeth, born in Berrima in 1857; she died in 1890 in Dubbo.

Yes now we just have to wait for Leonie to come back!!! :-)

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 14 Feb 2009 07:40

Hmm interesting, Richard & Ann BUNTER (aged 39 & 37 respectively) and family also came to NSW in 1849, aboard "Una".

Children:
Sarah 16
Robert 14
Eliza 9
Louisa 7
Mary Ann 5
Luke infant

Eldest 2 match census EvieBeavie found...!

They then had 2 more chn in NSW, Joseph C 1851 and James 1854.

Likely death for Richard in 1881 in Berrima, son of James & Ann; and wife Ann in 1885 in Berrima, dau James & Sarah.

Can't link them to Wm though....Oh hang on, William BUNTER died in Bowral in 1898, son of James & Ann!!! :-) Elizabeth also in Bowral, 1903 nee WILLIS. They married in Sherborne in Mar qtr 1848 (8/161). So..Grace BUNTER was a cousin!

What a fun chase, just hope Leonie gets in on the fun too...! Mind you, her head is going to be spinning after all this!
