John i cannot search for a marriage in Scotland but can see search and see image pages on Ancestry for England but no luck with this pair yet!Pity you cannot find a childs birth in Scotland for them as my one birth entry for one of my family in in Scotland gave me his parents date and place of marriage.Elizabeth would be a good one to find if she was really born in Scotland if only to dismiss this family!

"found a family with similiar names in Derby, "

I assume that should read West Derby - makes a slight difference of county!

For info i think this is the Rebecca Moorcroft (Morecroft) who may have married a Henry Martin (the marriage ref that could be them is 1847)
in 1841 census

Name: Rebecca Moorcroft
Age: 11
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1830
Gender: Female
Where born: Lancashire, England

Civil Parish: Walton On The Hill
Hundred: West Derby
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England
Household Members: Name Age
George Moorcroft 35
Mary Moorcroft 30
Rebecca Moorcroft 11
Elizabeth Moorcroft 9
William Moorcroft 4
Mary Moorcroft 1
N K Above 20

note---
*The ages of people over 15 years old were usually rounded down to the nearest 5 years. Therefore, someone who was actually 24 years would have their age listed as 20, and someone who was actually 27 years old would have their age listed as 25.

If this is the one then it doesn't fit with Rebecca born Scotland?

Well I haven't been idle but......spent a long time looking for the Henry Martin missing from the Burnley family in 1871. Still haven't found him. He doesn't appear to be an inmate/patient/pauper/lodger/brother/cousin etc etc anywhere else. There are plenty of Henry Martin's as head of family. Got any bigamists in your family John? haha.
Strange that Rebecca junior's birth details say Rebecca senior born County Down as on the census image for 1871 1881 & 1891 it says Scotland & two of them say Glasgow. Assuming Rebecca, as head at the time, gave the information to the enumerator I would think Scotland was correct as all the children's bithplaces are very carefully entered too (sometimes with different Census' place names get dropped but not the case with this family)
I will carry on looking!

Thanks John. As Henry's occuppation on Rebecca junior's birth reg is 'Furnaceman' that seems pretty conclusive that she is the Rebecca in the Burnley family on the Census' and the second piece of evidence confirming Rebecca senior's maiden name as Carnachan. So there was a Mary born into this family (probably George's twin) but we don't yet know what happened to her. Also on the birth reg in Nov 1855 henry's age was given as 30 and Rebecca's as 25 so that is helpful for our searches. What's to bet the deceased male child's name was Henry??

Jooleh

Jooleh Report 5 Feb 2009 18:21

Looks like Rennie Boomer is likely to be Rebecca junior's cousin then as her birth address is 1 Hartfield street?

John57 Report 5 Feb 2009 18:34

Hi Julie

yes all pointing to the Burnley Martins lol but not to my Martins

they still being elusive

Jooleh

Jooleh Report 5 Feb 2009 20:38

Ah but we still might find a connection somewhere. This Henry & Rebecca got married March 1852 so she must have been about 21/22 then because in Nov 1855 she was 25. It's not inconceivable that she was born Rebecca McEwan and had a brief former marriage to someone called Carnochan.......................maybe............lol

John57

John57 Report 5 Feb 2009 20:49

I had thought of that .. but still dont explain
McEwan on Mary's birthline if she was Carnachan...?

John57

John57 Report 5 Feb 2009 21:01

and if English law was the same as Scottish law ..you would all see what we see on Scotlands people.. you have seen what i have on my relatives...hahahaha

I don't know if this helps or not - I'm getting quite confused but

Mary Martin c 15-5-1859 at Great Crosby church was the daughter of Henry & Rebecca of Great Crosby - Henry was a brickmaker. Could ot find any other Martin baptisms with a year or so. No Robert Henry 1860/61

Why Can't CofE records be like the ones in the rc church around the same time which give dob, d of baptism , parents (incl mmn) and godparents - wonderful!

When did Henry die? Is he likely to have left a will?

John57

John57 Report 5 Feb 2009 21:52

Hi Ann ..not sure when Henry died..think info im getting is on different Henry and Rebecca's..just need to eliminate as i go..sorry about the confusion... im confused too at times... dont thing i have any positive evidence of date of birth of my Mary Martin

John57

John57 Report 5 Feb 2009 22:16

Henry and Rebecca( my Marys parents) alive when Mary married in 1876

but both deceased when Mary died in 1909

looked closer (magnified images)at Marys marriage and death certs on Scotlands People....could be misprint..one might say McEwain...?.. theres def a dot..or small blur above and to right of A on one...?
nopt sure if thats a derivitive of McEwan...

McElwain dif name,...and it dont say that

Jooleh Report 5 Feb 2009 22:56

Hi Ann I think we've been following two families, the Great Crosby one and the Burnley one. The main thing excluding the Great Crosby Mary is that if she was born/baptised May 1859 she would only be 16 when she married in Dec 1876. (I think John also found that family when he went to Great Crosby library and the mother was Rebecca Moorcroft?) The Burnley family looks more promising but still doesn't fit with John's family.

Name: Rebecca Martin
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1835
Year of Registration: 1897
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Age at Death: 62
District: Burnley
County: Lancashire, Yorkshire - West Riding
Volume: 8e

Name: Henry Martin
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1842
Year of Registration: 1879
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Age at Death: 37
District: Burnley
County: Lancashire, Yorkshire - West Riding
Volume: 8e

Jooleh Report 5 Feb 2009 23:24

Probably both the right family even though Rebecca's age should be about 67. Henry's death date explains why Rebecca was 'widowed' in 1881 but 'married' in 1871. Doesn't explain where Henry WAS in 1871 though!

John57

John57 Report 5 Feb 2009 23:29

we have 3 Martin familys...

1) Burnley Martin's

2) Crosby Martin's...Brighton Road

3) Great Crosby Martin's..Liverpool Road

all 3 have similiarities with each other... father Henry..mother Rebecca.. daughter Mary... one a brickmaker (furnace involved).. one a furnace tenter?..other one i forget...lol Daughter Mary's age all roughly same year...Mary only appears in census's untill 1871 or before..no site yet given Rebecca's maiden surname... very easy to follow wrong family..and any one of these three

John57

John57 Report 5 Feb 2009 23:32

Henry Rebecca Mary & lots of other Children in Chatham Kent. Mary born c1859. In 1861 Henry is a 'general trader' and in 1871 a 'traveller' so I dismissed them..................
