Could /would a butcher become a driver .

Battenburg Report 21 Dec 2008 08:03

Lewella
I think you have solved the mystery. One of the witnesses on Joseph Henry Browns marriage cert in 1898 is Laura H Brown. This is 1 year before a marriage for a Laura Helen Brown in West Ham.
Joseph Henry Brown married Rachel Hawkins.in 1898. Daughter Rachel Laura Edith ( Laura on census) born 1900 Forrest Gate Essex. Joseph and Rachel have a son Eric Stanley Reginald Brown born 5/5/1912 Willsden Middlesex.
My connection is Eric who married my aunt in 1933 in Middlesbrough. Rachel Elliott was a witness. She is Rachel Laura Edith.Brown
Rachel L E Brown is my new contacts gt grandmother. He is the one who has just received the marriage cert for Joseph Henry Brown with father James Henry. I will get him to check the occupation again because Rachels father William Hawkins occupation couldnt be understood. Its possible then the occupation for Josephs father was difficult to read

Thanks for your effort

Battenburg Report 21 Dec 2008 10:46

Just got a reply from my contact and the marriage cert does look like diver. He assumed it was driver because of the poor writing.

Now we need Laura Helen Browns husband in 1901 or was Laura a widow?

Plus still non of the Brown children found in 1891.
Found James Henry Brown

1881 census. James Henry Brown 1858 Barking Essex married occ master. On vessel" Bonnie lad" at Great Grimsby sub district

Found a marriage for Thomas James Brown in 1847 june qt Romford Essex . Other name on the page Jemima Webber. Any chance of a 1851 census look up please? .They are in Barking Romford

Until we find out Henry John O Ashton's age and father's details, he is going to be a bit hard to trace. Don't forget that in 1901 a lot of young men were away (Boer War). He could also have been away at sea.

As for Jemima Webber, this one is a possible:
