Find Ancestors

My gg grandfather was Walter Shinn born c.1857 Suffolk

On his marriage certificate his father's name is George Shinn.

I could find only one birth cert. that seemed OK. However the father's name was given as Samuel. The mother being Hannah.

Thought maybe Walter didn't know the correct name of his father when he married.

Checked further and found the following on the 1871 census

Walter Shinn aged 13 born Somerton with parents George and Elizabeth (right father wrong mother)

Walter Shinn aged 13 born Hawkendon with parents Samuel and Hannah (wrong father right mother)

Somerton and Hawkendon are with about 1mile of each other.
All fathers on census and certificates are labourers.

Who is my Walter? Any suggestions welcomed.

If by any chance both fathers are brothers then you will still be looking at the same ancestors

Yes. It's just a bit of a co-incidence that the father is right on one cert and wrong on another and the opposite way round on the other cert

Looking at the 1861 census I would say that Elizabeth is George's second wife. There is a son born in 1850 which is far to early for Elizabeth to be the mother. Just trying to find the marriage to support this

There is another complication there is a further 1861 census when the name is spelt Shynn. Walter is there with Samuel (wrong father) and Hannah (right mother)

So, what you need is a birth ref for George 1858

Yes. I keep changing my mind. Try to convince myself I've cracked it but don't think I have. Would help if I could find another Walter being born whichever way I spell Shinn/Shin/Shynn I can only find one

I meant Walter of course and not George....doh!

My feeling is that, if you know the marriage cert to be the right one....that is that the bride's details are correct and it ties in with everything else...then George is the father of Walter.

Then the birth cert you have is not for your Walter and that your Walter's birth cert is either mistranscribed or his parents didn't register him.

You only suspect his mother is called Hannah cos you've been looking at Samuel on the census.

Think I understand you. If I accept George is the father, then I have the wrong birth cert. as the parents are Samuel & Hannah.

What really stumps me is the two families 0n the 1871 census (my fist post).

Hannah on the 1891 has son Walter with her still and he is single.If yours was married 1882 then your answer is this Hannah is not the mother.George and Elizabeth were the parents and also births were not compulsory at the time of his birth so the cert you have is prob for the Walter who belonged to Samuel and Hannah.

Yes I found that Jemima died 1884 and Samuel married Hannah.

Think we are both confusing ourselves and each other now aren't we ?!!!!!!!

So in my reckoning, Samuel and Jemima are George's parents. Haqnnah is George's step mother. Both George and Elizabeth and Samuel and Hannah had sons in the same year both called Walter
