I recently discovered that my great x3 grandma Lizzie's dad was called Silas Edward Houghton. I asked on here earlier this week for help looking and was given some advice, but I still have not found him. Should I give up and accept that maybe my great grandma made him up?? Lizzie was born 'Lizzie Houghton' in 1871 in Warwickshire. Her mother is Sarah Ellen Houghton-which makes me think that she was married to Silas-but I cannot find a marriage. Silas was not on Lizzie's birth certificate-there was no info in the father box. I do know that Sarah married a Tom Pearce in 1872, though now I am not sure if I have the right Sarah Ellen. Tom Pearce does however show as a witness at Lizzie's wedding which makes me think that I DO have the right Sarah Ellen!! I'm so confused! I cannot find either a suitable birth or death for Silas. Things just don't add up. |

Sounds to me like Sarah was an unmarried mother when Lizzie was born. Do you have the marriage certificate for Sarah and Tom? |

well I know I looked when you had your other thread ad failed to find anything - just had another look - are you sure about Warwickshire? There are stacks of Silas Houghton's around but none in Warwickshire that I can see |

Thanks guys-you're right I will keep trying :) Yep I have the marriage cert for Sarah Ellen and Tom. I have just found a silas houghton on fmp.com on the 1891 census, born 1841, but he does not appear on any of the other census's and i cannot find the birth-very odd. Quite sure about Warwrickshire-all the family seem to be from the brum area so far. |

Thanks Monk. That's the thing-trying to work out if they were married. If Houghton is Sarah married name then part of the family is wrong. If it is her maiden name I have been searching correct so far. What are the chances of them just having the same surname-obviously it happens, but that can't be it?! My head hurts! |

Okay, in 1901, Sarah appears to be calling herself Ellen: |

You say you have the marriage cert of Sarah Ellen. If she had been married before it should show that. |

This Ann Houghton ties in with Sarah's mother in 1851. Although Lissie is noted as Ann's daughter, I believe she is probably Sarah's |

Lizzie is never shown on the census with her mum sarah ellen-in 1871 she was not born, 1881 she was visiting/living with her maternal grandmother and in 1891 she was a servant in a house. I have presumed that Tom Pearce was Lizzie's step father or her father but with a different surname as her parents were not married when she was born, so would she not just say Tom was her dad and not make up a name in silas? I cam across Silas on Lizzie's husbands roll of honour on fmp.com. for the first time the other day and was extremely confused! |

Plus, if Lissie was Ann's daughter, Ann would have been very old when she had her!!! |

Thanks Lewella. It seems Sarah Ellen went by the name Ellen as an adult. Yep, think that Ann is her grandma. :) |
