This is a good site for old medical terms.

http://www.antiquusmorbus.com

Phthisis was TB and was endemic in the 1800/ 1900,s. I have a 15 year old dying from it in 1903 plus my grt grandfather died in 1884 aged 37 from it as well.
Can remember there was still a TB convalescent Hospital at Margate in Kent when I was a girl in the 1940s/50s

nor can I find it on the Complete Index to Deaths ..... and I looked under JordAn, JordEn and JordOn

The only thing that I can suggest is that somehow the registration has been lost ..... maybe it did not get sent down from the local Registry office to GRO in London

All I can suggest is that you contact the local Registray Office, give them the information that you have, and ask if they can find it in their records.

Also that leaves on brother unaccounted for, here is the parish record of his birth, BIRTH 1891 JAMES HENRY JORDAN, 12 JULY 1891 St SILAS BYKER ADDRESS 46 MOWBRE ST is there anyway I can trace him after the 1901 census record.

Thanks all, I dont think he worked in the mines, in 1901 he was working as a page. his father was a publican, his brother, died a few month earlier, I have the burial record but not his death cert, sad, 2 sons lost in 2 month,
I expect the brother would have died from the same illness.

Thanks
Kathy

This is really strange, my great great grandmother died of this, she was born in 1847 and died in 1886. I thought it was some kind of cancer.

Phthisic, phthisis [From Greek phthisikos through Latin and Old French] 1 Pulmonary tuberculosis. 2 Any of various lung or throat affections; a severe cough; asthma.

This term, once very common but now extremely rare, had a large number of euphonious derivatives, e.g. phthisiology, phthisiologist, phthisiophobia, phthisicky, phthisiotherapy, and phthisiotherapist. Not to be confused with phthiriasis which means an infestation with lice.
