I paid 700 pounds which was a lot of money to me and have an incomplete tree but have filled in some gaps myself. I am also not living in the UK and have an empty UK bank account! just to fill you in on my situation but thanks for your offers of help on my missing info on this forum. Lets leave it at that.

As I said earlier Marmite it depends on what sort of tree you want. If you can afford to pay a genealogist to do the work for you then I fail to see how you can argue at £7 for the cost of a certificate.

But, it's your tree.

Perhaps others offering free lookups may help as I have drawn a blank. Thanks for your tips.

Jill I only want "circa" dates of death to tidy up and finish my Tripp section of my tree. You can see the tree on GRU, I had a geneologist (at huge expsence do a bad job) and help and contacts via GRU- but I must confess I am a bit challenged at looking myself and lack logic and patience. Although I have achived some results on my own of which I am proud.

Okay

Already posted this but will post it again to use as an example

James Tripconey 1801 married to Susanna Tripconey 1809 Manaccan Cornwall

You have him and his wife on 1881 given their ages they might not have lived to 1891 census. The registration district for the 1881 census was Helston

So found this possible death

Deaths Sep 1885 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tripconey James 75 Helston 5c 116

Susannah did not show immediately.

Do a search using years 1881 - 1891 - registration district of Helston - christian name of Susannah - leave surname box blank

Deaths Dec 1886 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TRIPCONY Susannah 80 Helston 5c 148

Depends on whether you want an accurate tree or not. Depends on how much you want to know about your ancestors other than the basic facts.

Yes, it can be a bit costly but you can spread the cost of certs or ask for them for birthday/Christmas presents.

Try that BDMshare site where people post info on their certs to share with others.

There are ways round it a bit ...

Familysearch might be useful to you - that's a free one as well.

Your joking I must buy certs!! this hobby is a money pit!!! Can I get approx dates??? that will do. I just tried two searches on that site and no luck.

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 6 Nov 2008 17:57

BUT you will only get dates of death if you buy the certs.

Finding the death registration will only give you a three month period in which the death was registered.

Marmite Report 6 Nov 2008 17:55

I dont want certs just death dates as you said below. Thanks Ill try it but I think I'll get know where.

This is the link:

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

It is free to search but you would need to pay for the certs if you need the information from them. They would cost you £7 from the GRO. Never pay more than £7.

Freebmd is completely free to search - if you want the certs themselves you have to buy them- here is the address:

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

This is the addy for FreeBMD - it is FREE - goes up to mid 1920's.

Go back to your previous thread with all the census info and then see which was the last census that members found the people on.

Marmite

Frankly, it doesn't really help just to repeat the original request.

If you have census info for them - or some of them - then the last census they appeared on is a help as the death obviously occurred after that date. I mean the fact that James Tripconey was born in 1801 probably implies that he was not alive in the 1901 census. Is he alive in the 1891? Or the 1881? Or the 1871? It all helps to narrow down the search period.

And as Potty says, you can search for a lot of this on FreeBMD - so maybe you should hunt down what you can on FreeBMD and then come back with the bits that you can't find and someone will be sure to help you.
