Pauline if you are thinking about buying the certificate you can get 'them' to check the parents name.
That way you only pay part of the fee instead of the full fee if it's the wrong certificate.

Hi everyone. Thank so much for all that information. It is wonderful. I have just found a cousin with all the above in his tree but not too many details. As far as he knows there is a death record in Lambeth for Henry Day 1878. This may be him.

The only way to know who John Samuel's mother was is to buy his birth certificate.

On the 61 census, John is unmarried, age 27 with housekeeper Ellen Blakley, 20 and son John Samuel, 2. Sure looks like John Samuel is son of John and his housekeeper.

On the 71 census John & Ellen are married with sons John Samuel, 12 and Henry, 2.
