I wonder what happened to Ellen when her mother died? She would only have been 10 or 11.
By 1901 she isnt living with her father or sister, though i suppose she could have married by then.

So in 1891, John is claiming he is single and Charlotte/Ann is claiming she is a widow?!

Those do like like the correct records for Charlotte Ann, thanks.

Thanks Janice, Chris and Julie ~ I was trying to avoid getting the certificate if at all possible but it seems it may be the only way to know for sure.

Susan ~ That is a possibility i suppose. Im also considering that maybe he died in the two years between the 1899 marriage of his daughter and the 1901 census.

ZZzzz

ZZzzz Report 20 Oct 2008 16:24

Maybe they emigrated?

Julie

Julie Report 20 Oct 2008 13:57

I really thing you'll need the cert to be 100% sure who he married especially as they can't be found on the census

Chris in Sussex

Chris in Sussex Report 20 Oct 2008 13:56

I agree with Janice...

Both Fanny and Margaret have the same reference number so unless you can identify the likely partner to John in the 1901 then you will need the marriage certificate.

jansmith Report 20 Oct 2008 13:50

They do have same numbers, i think unless you can be sure of them in a census you would need the cert

Gemerald

Gemerald Report 20 Oct 2008 12:40

Yes, thanks Susan. I had it in my head that they would have the same reference number!

ZZzzz

ZZzzz Report 20 Oct 2008 12:31

I looked for the reference for John then looked at the surnames of Fanny and Margaret for the same ref, if that makes sense.

Gemerald

Gemerald Report 20 Oct 2008 12:30

Ah i see, i didnt realise it listed wife's surnames that far back, thanks

Gemerald

Gemerald Report 20 Oct 2008 12:12

Thanks Susan! Can i ask how you figured that out?

Also, i need some help tracing his whereabouts after 1881.

This is what i have:
John Stafford Bateman b. AMJ 1856 Sunderland 10a 40.

1861 Census: John Stafford Bateman, aged 4 living with mother Ann (26) and Brother Thomas (2.) Sunderland, Durham.

1871 Census: John Bateman (14) with mother Ann (36), Father John (39) and siblings. Sunderland, Durham.

1881 Census: John S Bateman (24) with Wife Charlotte A (23) and daughter Isabella J. Sunderland, Durham (33 Ditchburn Terrace)

1897: Marriage (JAS) in Cardiff

06/12/1899: At marriage of his daughter Isabella Jane to Joseph George Dyke, Cardiff.

I cannot find John Stafford Bateman on the 1891 or 1901 census or a death record.

Edited to add: Thanks Kirsty, hopefully the above helps.
