If someone died in France in WW1 how would I locate their death certificate. Would it have been done in France and will I have to contact a French Registrar?

GlitterBaby Report 3 Oct 2008 21:32

Do you mean they were in the Army etc?

Findmypast has Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914-1918

Gigi Report 3 Oct 2008 21:33

No, the WW1 death certs can be searched on Findmypast. Also try searching for the death at cwgc.org.

Findmypast should have the registration details, and once the GRO reference is known, the certificate can be ordered from the GRO online.

However, if you have found the death details on CWGC you will probably find no further information on the cert than you already have. Cause of death is normally "died in action" or "died of wounds"

Splasher

Splasher Report 3 Oct 2008 21:58

What I need is his date of birth - will that be on the death certificate?

Sue C

Sue C Report 3 Oct 2008 22:00

No it wont.

Perhaps if you post the details you have on him, someone may be able to help you.

Thanks

Amokavid - Do the WW1 death cert's have parent's names on?

Sue C - I have posted his details before and got one possible for which I ordered the birth certificate.

I now have that but wanted to find a way to confirm it is actually him before I go off researching into people that may not be related.

His name's John Redden. Died in 1916 in Thiepval, France. The memorial says he was 24 so assuming he was born 1891-1893.

I have his marriage certificate but no d.o.b on there either.

I may try this findmypast site a couple of people have suggested.

Thx all :)

I have that - thanks Sue - that's how I can guess at his year of birth and how I traced his weeding certificate but unfortunatley neither of those led to finding his birth and you wouldn't believe how many Robert Redden's had sons named John!!!!! (and all of them in the same county) lol

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 3 Oct 2008 22:21

On the marriage cert what was his father's occupation?

Ozi.

Have you considered this birth?

Births Sep 1893 (>99%)

Redden John Stockton 10a 103

The district Stockton spans the boundaries of the counties of Co. Durham and North Riding of Yorkshire

Splasher Report 3 Oct 2008 22:26

Ozi - He was a miner which I'm afraid (as is becoming the theme here) is THE most common occupation of that period in that County. :(

Thanks Sue - that is the birth certificate I have just received and yes, it does look really promising but I just would have liked to have been able to double check the info on there. The mother on the birth certificate is Thomasine nee Sellers but the address says Trimdon Colliery.

I know there are Reddens from Trimdon Colliery but didn't think my Reddens were related to them.

Hey ho - I'm sure I'll get there, just not sure how - lol

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 3 Oct 2008 22:29

Good luck, Ozi.

Thanks for all the advice on this one. I went ahead and ordered the death certificate anyway and you were all absolutely right. There was no extra info (like parents names or date of birth). Hey ho - I'll learn by my mistakes!

www.durham.gov.uk.
John Redden married 1915 Durham Western to Mary E Burnell.

This site gives the name of spouse not just possible spouse
The marriage does not appear to be on freebmds ( Ancestry version)

From the same site
Mary married again .
Mary E Redden Mary E Burnell married 1920 Durham Central to John R Barron

Dates of birth only started to be added to English death certs after 1969. I know in Australia and New Zealand you get a lot more information.
