Richard, Pam, Seaham Lass, thank you all so much, you have expanded my tree - not in quite the way I imagined, the lead miner story has always been in family folk lore- but it now looks as if I'll never know who Robert's father was. You've all been great, so helpful to us newbies! |

It look s as if Mary Ann moved to Stockton when Robert got married as that is where he was(he was an engine driver) and then returned to Westmoreland for some reason. |

I guess so, and putting lead miner would 'explain' an early death. |

Looks as though Mary Ann had two sons named Robert as there is one listed on the 1841 census aged 2. |

May be she was Joseph's common law wife do you think? But then Joseph was def deceased at the time of Robert's marriage. |

Hello Richard, yes he's the one!! Thank you, I wondered if he had any siblings, but still no mention of Joseph. Can't believe mary ann had several illegitimate children? |

Please can somebody help me ? Joseph was my gggrandfather, according to his son, Robert's marriage certificate in 1868, he was a leadminer who was deceased at the time of the marriage. I have found Robert's birth certificate and he was born in Stainmore, Westmoreland on 23.10.1845.I know this to be correct from entries in the family Bible The birth was registered by his mother named as Mary Ann Nicholson, but no father is named and there is no maiden name for Mary Ann.I have found a marriage on BMD registerd in June 1846 between a Joseph Nicholson & a Mary Ann Magee but this is after the birth of Robert. Apart from Robert's marriage certificate(which is the original so I know it is the right family) I can find nothing about Joseph(or his 'wife') Thank you in anticipation! |
