At long last...4 years I have returned home. In the meantime things have changed with regard to Oxfordshire records, many are now freely available.
I still have my Parish Records, and Marriage discs, so if you need any help get in touch. Witnesses of marriages can be a great help, and are recorded on the Parish Registers.
My thanks to all members who have helped each other on this thread whilst I have been away travelling. Margaret.

Thanks for the additional edits, Chris!

It's probably safe to assume that the Elizabeth Peake is his eldest daughter, born about 1816. No, that can't be right for the reported death, that's MRS Elizabeth Peake so a possible third wife? Do I need to go chasing a third marriage, Emily -> Clara -> Elizabeth? The will record says "widow" so surely it must be safe to assume it was the deceased's widow?

Edit: Duh, this is Georges father & mother. I really shouldn't try and respond to these things quickly!! I think Elizabeth was Elizabeth Warcus born about 1774 although I'm awaiting evidence of that.

Brilliant, Chris, thank you!

I'm now in touch with a very helpful chap on Ancestry who has George and Emily in his tree.

Emily's death in 1840 explains her absence from the census records I have found so far.

Please can you say where / how you found the Oxford Chronicle and Reading Gazette record? My very limited experience with the British Newspaper Archive has been that searches almost always turn up more chaff than wheat, the OCR they use leaves a lot to be desired!

1st edit: I've found the 1814 marriage record but only in transcript form, can anyone find an image please?

2nd edit: I have found an image, thanks to The Oxfordshire Family History Society. Witnesses were Charles Barrett & Elizabeth Peake.

Do the names of the witness hold any clues?

When did Thomas marry...........and to whom?

KeithG

KeithG Report 6 Jun 2015 10:19

Thomas' marriage certificate gives his father's name as George Peake, Builder.

I would have thought you'd realize that

KeithG Report 6 Jun 2015 06:52

Hi Sylvia!

Thank you for finding that marriage. I think it must be his second (third?) as "his children" all predate the marriage by a considerable margin (1816 - 35).

I've written "his children" in quotes as I have found references to eight in census records and elsewhere but the records only show a small selection of the "children" in each record. That's always possible, of course, but it's almost as if there were two parallel families with the same family names. And the only census record I could find with a wife was Clara in 1861.

I'll look for that tree you've found and see if it provides any other hints. I found one reference to her but she was not "connected" to anyone else, I'll look again.

Thanks again, Sylvia

Yes, Jacqueline, that's one of them. There are also 1851 and 1861 records.

I haven't found George's marriage record yet. I'm guessing it MIGHT have been to Emily Sheppard. However the 1861 record has Clara as his (possibly second?) wife.

Birth records didn't exist before July 1837

You can verify his father's name by obtaining a copy of his marriage cert

Hello Margaret

I wonder whether you might be able to help, please. I'm looking for Thomas Peak(e), born about 1826. He's mentioned in an 1851 census report as being born in Oxford Heath. I believe his father was George Peake. I'd like to trace (ideally) a baptism / christening record and / or a birth record.

Many thanks

Keith
