Hi Sylvia

That's a lot to take in! Yes that is my mothers birth reg, I'm not sure about my grandad Herbert? I have one living relative who may know she is the daughter in law of Herberts brother Edward, she may have an idea.

As far as the marriage Greta I believe left my grandfather when my mother was quite young I think about 7-8yrs old and I was told that she went to London with a man (Unknown) and lived there.

The 1933 entry for Margaret and Herbert could Margaret be shortened to Greta? would that be common.

Thanks ever so much it looks like you have been flat out!

Just one thought

where did you look for their marriage??

For that time period, you have to look through the Complete Index on ancestry.co.uk, looking quarter by quarter year by year.

It is of course always possible that they did not marry, because they couldn't for some reason, but lived common law, and registered your mother's birth as if they were a married couple. You don't have to show proof of marriage to register a baby!

When you looked through the marriages 1930-1940 did you find any for Herbert Reay? Just wonderedif Greta had been married before and married with her 1st husband's name.

I hope you get this before you look too far into it. I feel awful everyone has been so helpful and I go and give the wrong information.

Thanks again

So if I order the cert then that will confirm whether her mum was married at the time?

Not a quick process is it.

Thanks for your help I will start with that.
